On my rewatch, I have been surprised with how poorly Pickett played. He had no confidence in his shot and butterfingers around the ball. He certainly wasn’t the only player playing poorly but I saw no reason for him to play 31 minutes. He had 8 rebounds, only Yurtseven had more, 9 rebounds!

Yeow, did the Terps put a hurt on Marquette or what? Cowan and Wiggins are the ideal backcourt and Simpson is a man under the boards. I hate to say this but Maryland should be a final four contender. And I sure hope our guys were watching how Maryland defended Howard. They were in his shorts the whole game. Pretty obvious you stop Howard and Marquette is in trouble. Or I am afraid that the Big East, excluding Depaul and possibly Seton Hall, is just not as tough as we expected this year. Have to agree. Seton Hall looks legit but everyone else is beatable. But Nova still scares me. They will be much better come February. Will we?

He’s awful in transition, and takes too many long twos. It’s a problem.

This was a disappointing loss because it is a game that we could have certainly won. First, UNCG is a pretty good team; they are certainly not a pushover. But, we played much of the game with 2 of their best players either out or banged up. So, effectively, even though UNCG was ranked around 99 coming into our game and we were ranked 62, we effectively were playing a worse team than that. And, we still lost. Here are a few thoughts:
- I will not beat a dead horse, because it's been covered here already, but the roster and personnel management in this game was pretty brutally bad. Ewing may have his reasons, but losing a game like this with LeBlanc playing only 11 minutes is inexcusable to me. The hockey-style type substitution that happened prior to our blowing the lead in the first half was not a good strategy.
- For whatever reason, this year's team is not taking threes. In 3PA/2PA we are ranked 329th, which means that we take fewer threes than almost anybody in Division 1. No, we are not a great three point shooting team, but we should be taking more threes, rather than constantly dumping it to the big guy for an inefficient post-up.
On the other end, our three point defense is among the worst in Division 1. Given Ewing's experience as an NBA assistant, I would have thought he'd be well-versed in the importance of threes, but we clearly are not playing that way. I don't know why.
- Akinjo really killed us this game, and I truly think he often gets a free pass on here. The guy was 3-9 from 2, 1-6 from three, and only had 1 assist. He had a few possessions in transition where he basically selfishly threw up a bad shot rather than passing it or holding back. He also has a penchant for taking long twos.
- Yurtseven was just not good. But, this is the problem with relying on the big guy/posting up as your offense. Going 3-12 from two range is absolutely terrible. I think he will be better than this in many games in the future, but the poor shooting and foul trouble really hurt us.
Bottom line, this was a game that we could have won and we did not lose because we don't have enough talent or good enough players.

If we don’t take and make threes, we are not going to be elite. We don’t even run plays to get open looks from three. It’s like we are stuck in the 80s.

I hope this gets deleted before someone gets in trouble this is unhealthy going forward! This is a tournament team when they play as a team! Transfer talk has been out of bounds here since the start. Obviously, there are sites who do not share this opinion, and they can stir up whatever discord they like. Not here. --AdminLol

Problem solved; just not quite in the way we might have preferred or anticipated. I did not see the game, but will say it certainly is a shame to miss a dunk at a pivotal time. I also noted an issue that has haunted us for years - the inability to get a key defensive rebound with the game on the line. In this game, it happened not just once, but twice.
