I am more worried about the defense than missing shots. The guys just don't seem to have a grasp of how to give help defense without totally ignoring perimeter shooters. I'm hoping it is just early and will be correctable...

The team just has no energy and refuses to play defense.
It’s very early, but right now it’s looking like a long season. I do think we have talent however - I’ve been very patient and even very encouraged at various points of Ewing’s first two seasons, but this rough start falls squarely on his shoulders. He needs to turn it around quickly, or risk losing the fanbase entirely. Decommits from promising and buzzed-about recruits won’t help that cause either.
First things first; Start LeBlanc. Every damn game. It’s absurd not to.

I believe that any new coach deserves 4 years to bring in his own kids and prove he can win with them. Fact is, this is year 3, and expectations are reasonably set at an NCAA bid at this point. If we fall far short of those expectations, Ewing belongs on the hot seat going into year 4.
Hope he gets it turned around obviously, and soon, but this is an expensive program that has fallen woefully short of expectations for a long time now. Gotta start putting up results.

THIS GAME STUNK!!!!!!!!! I mean what was that??? Yurseven and Akinjo were fine, Josh and Galen were passable and other than that, it was atrocious. To start with minor things, Allen and McClung have absolutely underperformed. They haven't lived up to the hype. They haven't returned what they should be. Pickett and Mosley were not good. Their solid performances didn't translate. Pickett would make one play, just to make one poor play (i.e. offensive rebound over a smaller player, to put it on the floor for no reason and it's stolen). And the team still loves turnovers. They turn it over all the time. 21 today and how many were unforced? 15? Away from specific guys who I think can step it up and will make less stupid mistakes, the defensive rotations were horrible. Shooters were left wide open as if they had the flu. Nobody went out and contested Jones or Dread who made most open looks, as they should. Coaching: The substitution rotations were atrocious. You can't run bench guys. It's not working. James and Yurt need to be on the floor MUCH MORE. The starters need more time, and Josh absolutely needs to start. He's the energy and something this team needed. One of James, Yurt, and Mac (once he breaks the slump) need to be on the floor at all times until the game is out of reach. You need a pure scorer and creator on at all times. The defense was horrible and the half-court sets suck. No player movement, the guard, typically Allen, sit at the logo uncontested until 13 seconds on the shot clock before something happens. That's the biggest waste, for a team that wants to play fast. Lead to a missed shot, leading to a Penn State break, ending with a dunk or a three. Embarrassing. Horrible. And why did Ewing stop pressing? You were getting steals and making plays!!! Without it, this game was over. And it ended once the press stopped. Ewing was outcoached and needs to pick it up. Now, I'm not saying he should be fired or he isn't the right man for the job, but he was horrible today. Nothing short of it, not really debatable. An absolutely pathetic performance, nothing went right. Nothing to grasp onto. Sunday needs to show improvement. Texas would absolutely destroy this team. Anything rotation related stunk, players stunk, you name it, everything was bad. Horrible start to the main Non-Conference slate. One game to redeem yourself, before being tested yet again. Texas would absolutely annihilate the team it faced today. It wouldn't be close. That team can't go to MSG. It would be an insult to the venue.

With the dreck that the New York Knickerbockers trot out on the home court forty-one days an NBA season, I think that the Garden is beyond insult.

Never really in the game. We had one brief run to lessen the margin to about 7 and they quickly brought it to double digits. The conference is going to be tough this year.

Definitely thought when we cut it to 5 that we would eventually catch and pass them. Opposite happened. Bizarre lineups and sub patterns doomed us. Really awful night for the program.

Would love to see plus/minus numbers as I feel the starting 5 out there together was atrocious for just about every minute they were all on the floor together. We can talk about substitution patterns and depth but when your starting 5 is consistently laying eggs as a unit, it is time to try something different.

Mac needs to come off the bench, plan and simple! Yurt7, Akinjo, Mosely, Pickett, LeBlanc or Alexander this needs to be the starting five! With this lineup you have speed, height, length, leadership, and heart! This has to get fixed!

Watching the Michigan State/Seton Hall game. It bears no relationship whatsoever to what we watched earlier tonight. Not sure we can think about playing at this level for a long, long time....

There was a time that I provided plus/minus numbers. I was admonished by some board members who thought that plus/minus was irrelevant, and that I was effectively wasting their time. So I stopped. Maybe someone else wants to do it....

I would consider starting Alexander at SG...he has 3 pt range, size at 6'6, handles it well, doesn't seem turnover prone and plays solid defense...gives us size in the backcourt that I think we lack...

Terrible performance and coaching in all phases. The start to this season has been hugely disappointing. It’s time to shorten the rotation and put Leblanc back in the starting lineup. If the team doesn’t show rapid improvement this season could get ugly very quickly. Ugh.

I thought Myron Gardner, the freshman, played great defense. He was reluctant to shoot the ball and when he did he shot a woeful airball, but he has a nose for the ball on defense. He has to have confidence in his shot. Take the shot that is there@
The guards have to be quicker with their catch and shoot, and block out. The lack of quickness and team speed was astounding.
Again, why is Mosley starting over Leblanc? What's the deal?

If we are looking for a positive from tonight its that there should be no way Yurt should leave for the NBA. He got manhandled by college kids. I still cant believe that nobody on the staff went back and watched that NC State vs Penn State game from 2 years ago when Yurt dominated and said hey maybe we should do that. Pat is determined to prove that low block centers are still a thing when they really aren't. How do you make that assumption about the staff watching film and scouting?

McClung and Blair are our primary SGs. They were a combined 2-10, and 0-4 from three. Add that Mosely and Allen are not offensive minded and we have a bad outcome. We are not going to win games if we can’t hit open threes. Mac looks lost out there, I can’t explain why. What's happening with Blair, he hasn't found the range!! If we have no external threats teams will shut down 7!! We need more quickness and assertiveness on both sides of the ball.

Blair seemed hesitant to launch a 3 and the one he did take was off-balance and he missed. For those bashing some of the players, they all stunk the joint up. Penn State played well and their defense was tough. I expect them to have a good season.
