Apparently 6’8” Lamar Stevens is a Big 10 Player of the Year candidate and the key to their team. I wonder who we put on him - Josh or Pickett? I haven’t seen him play, but it doesn’t look like he is an 3 point threat.

Hopefully we crack the 9k attendance mark for this one. This win could very well be more meaningful than a win against Cuse. We will learn a lot about our Hoyas in a few days.

If past is prologue, the Hoyas will generally play to level of competition. Should be a good one. Road victory against Illinois was a good one last year - first real glimpse of the beast from the east named MacKinjo (sic ?)!!!

Sorry, there ain't nothing, absolutely nothing, more meaningful or beautiful than beating SUcks. It's the olive in the martini of any any season. Having said that, it starts getting real with this game, though.

I’m with you....but I am talking strictly from an NCAA perspective in terms of making the tourney.

I'm assuming that Coach Ewing will go with the Man-to-Man concept, I'd like to see LeBlanc harass him on the floor throughout the game. Now if Stevens decides to come out to the perimeter, than have Pickett cause him problems out there.

On Stevens, he's such a talented player that you have to give him different looks and not let him get settled into anything. He's going to score, we just have to make it difficult for him and make him miss shots. Make life difficult for him, as he is the key to their offense. If his rhythm is disrupted, the team's rhythm is disrupted. Penn State is a team that will get better as the season goes on, so beating them now is big. Their guards aren't anything special, our backcourt should take advantage of that. They run mainly three sophomores with Brockington, Jones, and Dread mainly, and I don't know too much about any of them. Watkins the big man is a solid player, but not a particularly good defender, with a D-Rating of 93.1. Omer should have his way with them, or they will have to double him, opening up spots for shooters. It's not going to be an easy game, but this Hoyas team should win it. Penn State has looked better against their cupcakes than we have, but with the team being more locked in and the starters probably playing more, this is very winnable. Penn State is a slower-paced team, so if the Hoyas are to get out and run, and use that press with Allen pestering the younger ball handlers, this could really benefit us.

My one question about Penn State is why have they taken so many threes against such bad competition so far? Is that actually what their offense is going to look like? This might be a version of the Villanova gameplan if that's the case.

So begins the eight-game stretch with the Hoyas going up against at least six teams rated among the Top 100 by KenPom, including a possible matchup with Duke in the Empire Classic.

To heighten my enjoyment of the game, I am doing a bit of analytic based research on Penn State. Here are my observations for those who are interested.
The high usage players who return this year are Lamar Stevens (6’8” PF) 29.9%, Mike Watkins (6’9” C) @ 20.6%, and Myreon Jones (6’3” G) at 22.6%. This year Myles Dread (6’4” SF) has increased usage to 26.2% from 13.9%.
Last year, Lamar Stevens was a monster in transition and at the free-throw line, but he struggled with 2 pt jump shots. He was not a dangerous threat from behind the 3 point line. So far this year, it looks like more of the same. He is a dangerous but not efficient player. Based on his height, I guess that we will Leblanc, Pickett, and Alexander defend him. He will have a 1-2” height advantage on Leblanc and Alexander and a 20 lbs weight advantage on Pickett.
Mike Watkins is a big who will score in the paint and at the line. He has improved his offensive efficiency this year from 103 to 124 so far. He rebounds defensively at the same rate as Omer but his offensive rebound rate is only about ½ of Omer’s rate. Omer on the offensive glass vs. Watkins will be a key match-up.
It looks like Myreon Jones is a tall PG who has been playing well. In particular, he appears strong from deep, in transition, and from the line. This appears to be a distinct improvement from last year. He does appear susceptible to turnovers
Myles Dread is a high usage SF who is the most prolific 3 point shooter. He shot .356 last year but is shooting .40 with 15 attempts in just two games.
Their starting guards will have a height advantage of Akinjo and Mac 6’1” & 6”2 vs. 6’3” & 6”4”.
Here are some key questions for the game:
How will the Hoyas defend Lamar Stevens? Can they stay out of foul trouble?
Will Mike Watkins or Omer Yurtseven win the battle for points and rebounds in the paint?
In reserve minutes, how will Qudus match-up against this senior big with 20 lbs on him but 2” shorter? This will be a good test for Qudus.
Will the length at the guard position be a problem for the Hoyas?
Those are my thoughts for now.

James is not anywhere near 6’1. Well, so long as all players lie equally, the point will still hold.

More on Watkins vs. Omer....
Watkins was Penn State’s best defender statistically last year with a a rating of 93.1 per sports-reference significantly below the team average. This year he is off to an even stronger start with a 59.8 against the weaker early season competition. Watkins should be an interesting test for Omer. We should have a much better understanding of Omer after this game.

Myreon Jones, Curtis Jones, and Myles Dread, each of whom I expect to start along with their bigs, have taken over 50% of Penn State’s 3 pointers so far this season. There have been 30 three point attempts per game representing about half of their total shots. Season to date, they hit on 50%, 40% and 40% of these shots.
Looks like our 3 point defense will be critical to our success on Thursday.
For comparison, only 35% of the Hoyas shots have been 3 pointers.
