I just wanted to ask. I was a little young back then during the Gillery era of Hoya Basketball. My question is although he was 7'0 it seemed like he didn't get much playing time based on his "stats. I only saw one game on ESPN classic versus LSU in the tournament in 1988. Ben started only to be yanked in the first minute of play. I swear they the two teams changed ends of the court once, and JT2 had a sub sitting at the scorers table waiting to sub for Big Ben. Big Ben never played again that game I don't think. Please if anybody can fill me on Ben Gillery's game, please let us younger Hoya fans know.

This is all I know about Ben Gillery:
1) He loved talking about Boston College, the ACC, Duke, Dick Vitale, and Mike Shachefskey.
2) He appreciated it when people made fun of a young , moustached GU assistant coach
3) He loved using statistics to project the future performance of certain athletes (like how many rebounds a guy got per game as a good indicator of whether or not he was a good rebounder, or someone's batting average as a probability of that player getting a hit at any time).
4) He never presumed to be the smartest guy in the room and routinely conceeded defeat when he was proven wrong.
5) He thought everyone not from Georgetown was overrated.

That was pretty much Big Ben's role, from what I recall...
Win the tip...run down the court a few times...then in comes a sub to take his place...
He did have a pretty good game against the 'Cuse one year though...

Aggy's right about Ben's "big game against Cuse". It was in the "Smitty Coast to Coast" buzzer beater at the Dome to beat Cuse in '88 and Gillery held his own against Seikaly and played his best game as a Hoya. Heck, Ben played with Kings a year-or at least part of a season, so his time at GU paid off.
Most of the time we'd go to Ronnie Highsmith/Sam Jefferson/Anthony Allen/Jonathan Edwards after Ben played 2/3 minutes to start each half.

Funny you mention that - that game was my first Hoya game ever. My dad has been a Hoop Club member for a while and every year we used to trek from B-Lo to 'Cuse for the games. Saw some amazing teams/players for both sides. Counting the times we went up in college, I hadn't missed a GU game at 'Cuse until I went to grad school up in Boston. Good times, good times.
