We will see, but I truly think the dumping on Govan was somewhat misguided and exaggerated last season. If we improve a lot on defense this year it's going to be because the guards/wings have improved a lot on defense, or Yurtseven is a defensive superstar (which is not what I understand him to be). Our rotations and help defense were awful the last few years, which falls on more than just one player. To act like the disappearance of one player is going to be the difference-maker I think is simplifying our defensive problems way too much. I don't have the stats, but does anybody know what our defensive PPP was with/without Govan? Disagree. With few exceptions, the anchor of any defense in college basketball is the presence of a strong big in the middle. Jessie was not it. That is not bashing him; that's reality. Omer might not be the second coming of Pat defensively, but he's better than Jessie on defense. That alone will improve our defense. Add Qudus (we shall see how ready Tim and Malcolm are) or one-year older Josh or Pickett to replace defensively-challenged Trey, and you have a better defensive frontcourt than last year. If Pat wants to go even stronger on defense, he uses three of these players together for parts of a game. I can see Pat using zones strategically. In sum, a stronger frontcourt will lead to better defensive numbers. I agree with you in the sense that defense starts with the guards and wings as the first line of defense, but that is not the main reason why GU will "improve a lot on defense this year". I also agree with you in that Pat needs to improve defensive rotations, and from reports Pat has been emphasizing the defensive game/communication during thia off-season. But after the defensive pain of the past two seasons, Pat went out and recruited a class of strong defensive players with great class balance. So mainly we're going to be better defensively by roster replacement, plus Pat's adjustment to the college game.

I think one of the reason's jessie was a poor defender is because he knew if he went out with fouls we were screwed. If we had a serviceable back up option I contecd jessie would've played defense better because he wouldn't be trying to avoid fouls and could've defended more aggressively. I don't think he would've been amazing, but he would've been noticeably better.

We have to exploit our depth and part of that is an aggressive style.

I occasionally thought the same thing but then I'd watch Jesse try to beat his man to a spot or actually leave his feet to block a shot and think - no.

Yes, agressive, but controlled. I don't want to put the opposing team in the bonus with 12 minutes left in the half, like we were doing a few years ago. Coach has them not jumping every time a pump fake is used.
I am really looking forward to the start of this season (said the New York Knicks and Miami Hurricanes fan).

But would've been tournament bound with MD if he had stayed another year. We were soft in every position MD could've played SF, PF, and backup to the backup center position.

Just thought I would share the following that I noticed from reviewing Ken Pom’s pre-season model for this year.
19/20. 18/19 Off Eff. 108.2 108.9 Def Eff. 94.8. 102.5. Adj. T. 74.5 71.9
So it looks like Ken Pom’s model is expecting a 7.5% improvement in defensive efficiency and a 3.6% increase in tempo with a consistent offensive efficiency. The pre-season ranking is #56 compared to our ending ranking of #100.
