It would be better if it were sincere or if he had anything to do with creating the message. Someone wrote a good speech but it's completely empty coming from that buffoon.

My Dad went over to France as part of the D-Day invasion. He wasn't in the first wave, but probably during the 5th or 6th day. He had reached Germany when I was born that August. Fortunately for me, he survived. Let us remember those who had died in support of this invasion. Now only three to four percent of the soldiers survived to this day.

Eisenhower's message to the troops.
I was honored to meet General Eisenhower three years and a month after D-Day.

An amazing man. Know you were proud of his part in this unbelievable crusade.

My dad was not at D-Day but at the Battle of the Colmar Pocket, the "Forgotten Campaign" in Alsace, 7th Army. He spent the last 3 years of his Army service as part of the occupation forces in Germany. He took advantage of the GI Bill to go to college and served 24 more years in the CIA. Sadly, his last overseas posting was my sophomore year at Georgetown when he was evacuated off the US Embassy roof on April 29, 1975. He retired shortly thereafter.

What is historically of note is that the battle against Hitler took place while the U.S. and allies were conducting war against Japan. Significant naval battles had taken place at Coral Sea (May 1942), Midway (June 1942), and the Eastern Solomons (August 1942). These had softened the Japanese leading up to the invasions of Guadalcanal (August 1942-February 1943), Iwo Jima (February-March 1945) and Okinawa (April-June 1945), the latter during the same time frame as D-Day.

Regarding the Pacific Theater, thought you may find this interesting. From Pearl Harbor to Iwo Jima . . . This profile from 5 years ago featured one of my father's best friends. A Marine vet and CIA colleague. At Miller's request, my brother gave Miller's eulogy at his funeral 3 years ago. www.washingtonpost.com/news/drawing-dc-together/wp/2014/11/10/thomas-w-miller-veteran/?utm_term=.ea8d1789a667
