“Live, from New York, it’s Georgetown-Not-Playing-On-Wednesday-Night!”
It’s time for the Big East Conference Tournament, to be played once again in the self-proclaimed “World’s Most Famous Arena.” The other conferences whose tournaments had not yet commenced last week also get going, in the run-up to Selection Sunday on March 17. After an improbable week in which the Hoyas were hammered by DePaul, only to three days later shock then-ranked #16 Marquette, Georgetown enters the Big East Conference Tournament as the #6 seed, with a first game Thursday night against #3 seed Seton Hall. The winner of that game matches up against the winner of the Marquette game against either St. John’s or DePaul.
The top three teams in the Associated Press Top 25 held serve, with #1 Gonzaga, #2 Virginia and #3 North Carolina retaining their positions. Central Florida (formerly #25) fell out of the rankings after losing 67-62 at Temple; back in the polls at #22 is Auburn, after wins at Alabama (66-60) and against then-ranked #5 Tennessee (84-80).
The biggest leap in the AP Top 25 was by Michigan State (up three slots to #6), Nevada (up three slots to #14) and Maryland (up three slots to #21); the Spartans moved up after wins against Nebraska (91-76) and then-ranked #7 Michigan (75-63), the Wolf Pack moved up after wins at Air Force (90-79) and against San Diego State (81-53), and the Terrapins moved up after a win against Minnesota (69-60).
Marquette was the biggest loser in the polls, dropping seven slots to #23 after extending their season-long losing streak to four games with a 73-64 loss at Seton Hall and the 86-84 loss to the Hoyas. Kansas fell four spots to #17 losing at Oklahoma, 81-68, and Cincinnati likewise fell four slots after losing at then-ranked #25 Central Florida, 58-55, and to then-ranked #12 Houston, 85-69. There are still two Big East Conference teams in the AP Top 25, with Villanova falling two slots to #25 after losing 79-75 at Seton Hall; no other Big East Conference schools received any votes.
Tournament games are listed chronologically, as well as on a conference-by-conference basis. Tournament pairings will be updated on a daily basis, after my return to New Jersey from the Big East Conference tournament. NOTE: Updated as of 5:44 pm on March 17.
All times listed are Eastern Daylight Time.
