One of my favorite ballplayers as I rooted for the Orioles by default since the Senators left DC in 1971. I had forgotten that he played HS basketball with Bill Russell.

Amen.
A fabulous player and ferocious competitor. If you want some great footage, watch the tape of him arguing that he got hit by a pitch in the ‘69 Series against the Mets.
He was damn near apoplectic. It was only mad worse when Gil Hodges brought out the shoe polish ball a few innings later and Cleon Jones was awarded first base right ahead of Clendenon’s homer that brought the Mets within 3-2 in the eventual 5-3 clincher.

Great player with the Reds and Orioles. I loved watching the Robby Brothers (Frank and Brooks) with the Birds.
I didn't recall that he was the first African-American manager. No big deal now, of course, but someone had to be first, and I'm sure it wasn't easy (although I did read in the article today that, when asked about that, he said that what he went through couldn't compare in any way to what his other brother Jackie went through, which was certainly true).
