As someone has already stated, 40 times are often exaggerated at the high school level for purposes of college recruiting. All these guys who claimed to have run 4.2s and 4.3s in high school often get a lot slower once they run the 40 at the combine. My high school team-mate was also clocked at 4.25...in pads... He was a wide receiver at Western Carolina...The other played wide receiver at Elizabeth City State... I don't have their 40 times, but you can look-up their 100m and 200m times on-line... Let me know if you need the info... They were both legit 4.2 guys...

Very interesting article. Sort of confirms what I suspected...not that many football players are world class sprinters. Sprinters work on nothing other than speed, yet if you believe the times that get thrown around, there are about 20 kids in every high school class as fast as them. Thanks for the article.
AI is VERY fast. He is not as fast as Justin Gatlin.

Track-Speed comes with training...
Most of our athletes train to be quick and fast over short distances...baskerball, football & baseball...
There are definitely a lot of football players that would be world class sprinters if they were exclusively track guys...Randy Moss for example...
I have a friend that ran for Maryland who stated how effortlessly Peter Warrick jumped 25'-26'...if he were exclusively a track guy, he could push for World Class level...
Raghib Ismail was a great 60m guy, but wasn't that great in the 100m...

But I'm also cynical about claims that an athlete from one sport could be a great athlete at another sport if he just put all his time into it. This detracts from the tremendous athleticism of track stars. Donovan Bailey was said to have a 45 inch vertical, and could dunk with ease. I guess my point is this: not all athletes who are great at one sport could make the transition to another sport....even if that sport is track and field, where one does nothing but run as fast as they can.

I don't agree...but I respect your opinion... I think the transition from basketball to baseball or football would be a greater adjustment than transitioning to running sprints...IMO... I always get the same response when I tell the story about my high school teammates...I told the story to a bunch of football players at A&T and I was met with similar disbelief... The comments went sorta like this... "If those guys ran a 4.2, they'd be at a big school!!!"..."Why haven't I heard of them?"..."You're lying!!!"..."Where did they go to school?" When I finally spoke again I said, "One went to Elizabeth City State, and the other goes to Western Carolina..." One of the running backs said, “What is the guy’s name that plays at Western?” And I told him… “Oh!!! …He ain’t lyin’… I just transferred from Western and that guy ran a 4.25 in pads…” But hey...It's just talk to help us pass the time until basketball season...definitely no harm in that...

If they guy ran a legit 4.25 in pads, he'd be in the NFL. Period. He could have bad hands and he'd still be in. Period.
40 times are the most exaggerated stat in the world. They only 40 times I even remotely believe are those coming out of something like the NFL combine where you have a bunch of timers who don't give a rats ass who's running. If an athlete's high school or college is reporting the number, 99 times out of 100 its going to be HEAVILY skewed in his favor.
That article confirms it. Some guy ran a 4.3-something but Parcells' clock said 4.25? When the same sprint generates a whole plethora of times, you know something's up. Until they use those pressurized starting blocks they use in the Olympics and a laser finish line to get accurate 40 times, I'll throw it in with the rest of that overrated combine crap.

Period. sorry you don't believe it, my friend... there's nothing I can say that will change your mind...you didn't see him run...it was a sight to see... Speak of the devil…He just called me this morning…I was telling him how I once again was trying to convince people that he ran a 4.2 40yd… “They still doubtin’ me Aggypryd?” ‘Yeah, man…’ If you go to the North Carolina High School athletic sight, and look-up the track and field stats, you’ll see where he ran a 10.4 100m our senior year in high school…1989…(he got 2nd)… I have no documentation of his 40 times… FYI…not all 4.2 guys are in the NFL… There were a bunch of legit 4.2 guys in the MEAC that didn’t make it to the NFL…Patel Troutman is one example…option QB for Bethune… By the way…My team-mate was 5’6” 175lbs… What NFL team would he have played for?

Yeah I'm not saying he wasn't fast, I'm just saying (1) I don't believe 40 times when a player's own institution records them, and (2) I just don't trust 40 recording at ANY level until they bring in some objective standards like track and field bodies use with the pressurized starting blocks, laser finish lines, etc. I know not all 4.2 guys are in the NFL. I was being a tad over-broad for emphasis sake, my bad. My point was simply that 40-times are not only over-valued, but under-regulated... too subjective.

I agree with both of you…
I just thought it was interesting…definitely doesn’t make me an authority on the 40yd dash…
I wish you guys could have seen him, Booker and Randy Jordan in the North Carolina State Championship in ’88 & '89…Those 3 guys are the fastest humans I’ve ever seen in person…
Truly remarkable…

Its amazing what seeing just flat out speed stirs up in someone. My good friend was at the last Olympic track trials. Said seeing Gatlin, Crawford, Wariner, Greene, Alyson Felix... it was just a sight to behold. Said about a thousand times "Man, TV doesn't do them justice."

I know… You hear commentators during NFL games saying the same thing about Mike Vick… I hope to finally make my way up to the PENN relays…

Darryl Green for the Redskins was a sprinter in college. I think he placed third in the 100 next to Carl Lewis and another runner I believe.

Aggy... fortunately, the Bills play Atlanta in Buffalo this year, and my old man got tickets so I get to join the ranks of "ooooooooooooooooh-ers" and "ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh-ers." I won't mind a big run or two... just so long as stupid Peerless "Most Overrated WR Ever" Price doesn't do anything of note.

My brother lives in Atlanta, and has made a habit of ripping Peerless wherever he goes...the barber shop, hanging out with the fellas, at church...whenever they're talking about the Falcons, he's downing Peerless... One day, my brother pulls into the church parking lot and sees a beautiful black Bentley parked up front...He goes to the Pastor's wife and says, "Who's Bentley is that parked outside?" She said, 'Oh...you don't know? That's brother Peerless' car...' "Who?" 'Brother Peerless...you know...he plays for the Falcons...' He told me, "yeah, man...I have to stop talking about Brother Peerless...at least at church...'

Wasn't Green still winning the fastest man in the NFL when he was pushing 40? If my memory serves me correctly, he was brought back this year at the pro bowl to race against some of the young guys... He didn't win...but he was definitely nippin' at their heels at the finish-line... Remarkable...I'm 34, and I can't do a 3rd of the things I use to do 4 years ago...

He told me, "yeah, man...I have to stop talking about Brother Peerless...at least at church...' Yeah I'm with your brother, aggy. He and I sound like we'd be best friends. Price always had a LOT of talent, but he just never put it together. My father is friend's with the Bills' team doctors, and they would always tell him (during Price's first few years when nobody heard a peep out of him) that his concentration was never consistent, he never fully dedicated himself to off-season programs, and just gave off the impression he didn't care that much (it didn't help he has one of the NFL's most dedicated - and underrated - WR's alongside him in Eric Moulds... who's so good, but has never had a really good QB, but I can talk about that some other time). Then LO AND BEHOLD! Contract year? He stays in Buffalo all off-season working out? Has a monster year? Talks about how he's "re-dedicated" and all that jazz? Then of course he bolts for the big money, the Bills move on, and the Falcons get a complete dud. The guy is tiny for a #1 WR, which is the money they are paying him. He's got the most lazy attitude I've seen in Buffalo since Rob Johnson. He's just not that good. Put a Pro-Bowler on the other side of him and he's nasty... but so would you and I be Before I go on and on, I'm going to cut myself off and ask you to tell your brother to keep on trashing him... except for maybe in church.
