Without looking at Edgar's numbers, I just remember being scared crapless that he'd come up to the plate with guys on. I don't know if his numbers adequately reflect how dominant of a hitter he was at his peak. That said, it sure feels like an inclusion as a way to open the door to let David Ortiz in. It's not as though Edgar has gotten better over the past several years. Congratulations to Mariano. The man was a model of greatness and humility. Class act all the way. I understand (and somewhat agree) the debate about the closer role but, since it's, apparently, here to stay, one would have to work pretty hard to find a reason to not vote him in. I am biased about Edgar Martinez, because I drafted him as a young third baseman in my fantasy baseball league back in 1990. It was a keeper league, and I kept him. Unfairly treated by HoF voters because he was primarily a designated hitter. Should have been in the Hall years ago.

And it is a legitimate "position" that's not going anywhere. If a DH can win a batting title, a DH should be able to be voted into the Hall.

It's not as though Edgar has gotten better over the past several years. Ortiz was always getting in first ballot - same rate numbers as Edgar, hit some of the counting number mileposts (500+ HR), better name recognition, people love him, plus memorable postseason narrative stuff. He checks all the good criteria and all the horrible old person gatekeeper/barbershop criteria as well. If anything, the Baines thing opened the door for Edgar because there's no excuse for Edgar to be out if Baines is in.
