Jessie doesn’t seem like he’s giving it his all on defense. Treys minutes should go to Leblanc for obvious reasons. Jagan should only be used in junk time. I don’t know what Ewing is doing with Pickett and Blair but it’s starting to concern me. And the whole team is infected by some bizarre turnover bug.

It’s has a lot to do with personnel. Pat was left with an upperclassmen vacuum. I look at our freshman class as his true first. We need to build by bringing in some solid ‘20 kids and transfers. Gritty, athletes who can put the ball in the basket.

Team played...I have issues with Govan...."And as good as he is offensively, Govan is a horrific defensive player"...he's very weak defensively! Our interior defense stinks!! He is not leading...kind of lax in my opinion. Given our guard corps, I would live and die with the freshmen guards.. They make mistakes trying to do the right thing. We need a shooter...Jahvon seem rather limited to catch and shoot. Josh Leblanc needs to be on the floor as much as possibe! He us our best defensive equalizer and is a strong utility player! We need better defense and chemistry. And stronger more efficient offense..more weapons, sigh! Leblanc played 28 minutes (compared to Mourning's 21) so that's probably close to max for him already. Govan played 31. Mac / Akinjo on the floor at the same time so often is problematic as they don't have great outside shooting. I think Blair needs to be out there more, Mosely less. Blair is limited but keeps the defense honest.

Offensively, it's interesting to me, because we've gone completely 180 in terms of how we play. We've gone from a "never call a real play, never run anything for a particular player and just run motion" (Princeton) to a "run a variety of defined sets with limited motion, including frequent plays run for specific people." Am I the only one that wishes we found a bit of a happy medium? There are times when having everyone on the court touch the ball in a possession, even if they're not actually attacking, is valuable -- it forces all five defenders to defend, makes spacing easier, and keeps everyone involved. A lot of talk on here about the freshmen guards. I agree completely with SF and others that note that they're two of the only players that can actually create offense and, thus, need to be on the court often and need to be allowed to, well, try to create. I would also note, though, that I don't see any real reason to run pin-down, run away from the basket, catch-turn-and-shoot plays for Mac. He just hasn't the shown the ability to hit them consistently yet (maybe he does in practice...hence the plays?). If he steps into an open three, fine. No issues from me on those. Defensively? I'd like to see us work on (and try in the game more) both a true diamond press and also a 1-2-2 "slow the other team up" press. I've seen us do both, so I know they're at least nominally in our arsenal. Especially when only one of Jesse and Trey is in the game, we have the athleticism for either one. The former may get us some easy baskets, which we sorely need, and the latter would allow us to play less half-court defense...and we ain't exactly Virginia with our half-court defense. Lots of talk on her re: Trey, and I get it. But Josh played 28 minutes yesterday. Realistically, he's not going to play much more than that in any scenario. So who gets the minutes instead of Trey? Jesse's already playing 30. Greg? Kaleb? They combined for 30 yesterday with little to show for it. Jamorko? I guess we could try to just go really small but that's hard to do without a center that provides mobile rim protection. I'm in this camp as well, ball & player movement is the best way to attack a defense in my view... Sure Akinjo & Mac can create shots for themselves but how valuable is that when they're shooting 38.0% & 36.5% from the field? There are definitely times where the staff will need them to make a play but for the most part, I think they have to learn to let the game come to them...

It's like having Game 7 John Starks out there every game.

Some of it was discussed before the game in the game thread. It was effectively a must win to get to the tourney unless we go on a miracle run in NYC. For as bad as the Big East is this year there will be no easy wins. At this point we would have to be considered the worst team so its hard to envision us getting to the 10 wins we need to get to in conference when we cant win a home game over SMU.

I still think Xavier has been the worst team to this point. They have a huge game tomorrow, but if they lose that they have to be considered the worst. Depaul and us to this point could be a toss up. By no means would X be an easy game of course.
