I don't think I would have been happy with 10-3 entering conference play but now things have changed.........don't look past anyone and handle the Zone and we should be 10-3 entering the Provy game The opponents have been better than we all expected. Oklahoma State won the NIT season tip off including dominating an Ole Miss team who should make the tournament. Penn State has looked very solid and their one loss was very fluky, to that same solid Ole Miss squad. Texas went into Purdue and beat them, something that UVA couldn't do. All these teams have been much better than expected at this point. The Hoyas also got to play Duke, which is huge for the SOS. SMU is a talented team, but they haven't played an opponent like the Hoyas. It really could throw them off having to face a high major opponent.

This is a season where there really is no dominant team. The NCAA tournament is going to be as wide open as I can ever remember. A lot of good teams that are flawed. Wouldn't be surprised if multiple mid majors and middling Power conference teams make deep runs this year. Could see a team like Kemba's UCONN team that was 9-9 in BE conference play win it all...

I didn't see us getting to Duke. I figured one loss in Brooklyn, one loss on this road trip, and at least one "bad" loss, and a loss between Penn St and Syracuse. 10-3 would have been a pleasant surprise.

Don’t look now, but after the SMU game, the Hoyas have the #6 SOS in the country according to RPI (27th according to KenPom).

I just checked real-time rpi and saw us ranked 77th with SOS at 36th (still solid). With Syracuse at 32 and 6 BiG East in Top 50 RPI, the remaining schedule should keep us with a very healthy SOS.

Thanks for the heads up, lcpolo) ELO: 36th (Just don't look at his predicted RPI/results for the season, which have the Hoyas going 3-15 in Big East -- KenPom just bumped us from 6-12 to 8-10 after OK State and SMU).

Looks like he does binary outcomes for the predictions. So if we're a 51%-49% underdog in any game, WarrenNolan counts it as a predicted loss individually AND in the overall. KenPom has us favored for only 7 of our games currently, but predicts the overall at 8-10 -- because he re-calculates the overall odds based on the sum of the individuals.

If we can win the next 3 as we should, going 10-3 against this schedule is a great feat. Going into this year (before all the turmoil) 10-3 was my realistic hope thinking we’d beat PSU, beat Texas, lose to Duke, and lose 2 of OSU, SMU, Cuse, UNCG.
Penn State turned out to be a better loss than we could have thought while SMU and OSU hopefully turn out to be better road wins than originally thought.
Really sets up for us to have a strong resume going into conference play. It was the perfect schedule IMO - few computer crushing 300+ teams, some road and neutral games, games against teams 20-75, and one game against an elite team. The schedule came a long way from year 1 of the Ewing era.

For perspective on the schedule, Samford is 167 in KenPom right now. That makes them the ninth best team in our nonconference schedule.
If this team had it on our 2017-18 schedule, it would have been the third best opponent we played in the non-conference.
After Cuse, WarrenNolan.com has the Hoyas as 24th in RPI and 4th in SOS. That’ll come down a bit, but not by much.
