I know there is a lot of irrational Amaker hate on this board (based on comments during the post-JT3 coaching "search") , but the idea that kids are choosing Harvard solely because of the school's academic reputation and not the basketball program that Amaker has put together AT the school with the stellar academic reputation is preposterous. I am sure plenty of kids like Amaker and that's a major reason why they also choose Harvard. Obviously, a guy like Ledlum is going to consider Harvard in large part because they are one of the best Ivy basketball programs. I am sure that's why Ledlum was interested in Harvard, and not in Columbia, Dartmouth, etc. The fact that Harvard has done well in recent years really increases the appeal level. But still, even if Harvard is a good Ivy program (and they have been), there is a pretty low ceiling on NCAA aspirations, and you're generally not going to be playing at the highest level. That being said, you really cannot compare our recruiting to Harvard's. While we sometimes overlap with Harvard on seeking talent (for example, Ledlum), for the most part, the guys we are going to be recruiting (or should be recruiting) are largely going to be on a different level than those attracted by Harvard. To the extent Harvard has better recruiting classes than us (as a previous poster mentioned), I think that would be more a reflection that our recruiting for 2019 has been poor thus far, rather than an indication that Harvard's is great.

So we should expect Harvard to have the #31 2019 recruiting class and Georgetown to have the #111 class at this point because "Harvard is Harvard" and shrug our shoulders when kids like Ledlum to be picking Harvard over Georgetown? It has nothing to do with Amaker and the Harvard basketball program? If that is the case, why didn't Georgetown have a higher ranked recruiting class than Georgetown until 2016, and now 2 of the last 3 years? Here are the Ewing recruits to date: Jahvon Blair Trey Dickerson (5th year from South Dakota) Jamorko Pickett (decommit from Mississippi) Chris Sodom (decommit from New Mexico) James Akinjo (decommit from Connecticut) Mac McClung (decommit from Rutgers) Grayson Carter Josh LeBlanc Malcolm Wilson Tim Igohefe

What could be irrational about hating one of Count Chocula’s minions who cheated while coaching at Harvard?

Pat’s grinding. Recruiting is a cesspool and too many programs that look alike these days. Hard to stand out.

Decommits, transfers, foreign players, kids who were pursued from 8th grade..... To me personally? I don't care how Coach gets talent for our team.... as long as he gets kids here.
Given the absence of significant lead time that the vast majority of college coaches have with these kids, and that after 18 months on the job Coach is still playing catchup, Hoya recruiting has gone reasonably well. Class of '17 was good, class of '18 is better, Class of '19 is incomplete.
I agree with those who say recruiting decommits is not a viable, long-term strategy. But hey, it's worked so far... so keep after it -- along with all the other avenues
To me, the more immediate/important issue is -- can he get the kids who are already here to play smart, hard-nosed, high effort and effective basketball. Seems like we are going in the right direction, but plenty of progress is still to be made.

Agree completely with this. Harvard is still Harvard. When I was applying to law school, I could have stayed at GU. But I was accepted at Harvard (and Stanford - actually everywhere I applied, except UCLA - go figure).I was actually looking forward at the time to returning to California, but once I was accepted at Harvard, my entire perspective changed. Now it's probably not a completely appropriate comparison, but bottom line is that Harvard is still Harvard. So we should expect Harvard to have the #31 2019 recruiting class and Georgetown to have the #111 class at this point because "Harvard is Harvard" and shrug our shoulders when kids like Ledlum to be picking Harvard over Georgetown? I don't know that anyone said it was solely because of the academics. The kid isn't playing basketball at MIT or Cal Tech rather than Georgetown. Harvard's hoops program is certainly decent, but the fact is that most basketball recruits wouldn't even give the Ivies a sniff (and vice versa), and a kid who is very strong academically shouldn't be criticized for selecting Harvard.

Your mind frame/feelings comes across quite clearly through all your comments. Just letting you know I can here you beating the "I wish someone else was coaching the Hoyas" drum from Texas to Florida. I doubt I'm the only one that can here it... Two thoughts. 1. Point of personal privilege: Your board profile lists your joining here in 2015. Maybe you were a lurker before this, maybe not, but I question when people, whom I've never met, that tell me what I think. Over the last 21 years of this board, I have had various posters claim, in no particular order, that a) I worked for the Thompsons; b) I had it in for the Thompsons; c) I was a friend of Craig Esherick; d) I worked for the University; e) I was protecting John Thompson III... and none were true. Others have posited some sort of subterranean motive for opinions when they are archived for posterity to see. I don't post under multiple names and everyone down the line at GU knows my handle on this board, so I'm not exactly anonymous. (And frankly, my "beat-the-drum" posts are usually reserved for the football program.) And other times, some people just don't get it, such as the former poster who once characterized me as a hillbilly and a racist because the board rules conflicted with his stream-of-consciousness posts. He now has a Twitter feed which has posted over 240,000 times, or about 236,000 more than anything I've said on this board. Next, I do not " wish someone else was coaching the Hoyas" and never have. I subscribe to the approach that once a decision is made, you support the leader. I do. Ewing is doing what he needs to succeed and that's good. I expressed an opinion in 2017 that Georgetown should have sought a younger candidate, and this is from someone who is a contemporary of Ewing and lived three buildings down from him in Village A for two years. The coaching search process may have been flawed but the candidate was not. Finally, I respect your opinion and do not project any motive based on who you are, or where you are, or what you do for a living; therefore, I hope to receive the same respect in return. As I said a few years ago, Georgetown took a chance on me many years ago and I am loyal to Georgetown in return. Send me a DM or e-mail if you'd like to talk further, but please don't project onto my thoughts anymore than you would to anyone else. Now on to point two: 2. Recruiting. I'm not against picking up decommits. If that's what it takes to be competitive, I'm fine with it. But I still don't quite understand why more recruits are not giving Georgetown more than a cursory look these days when they are considering programs. Yes, I get the clinical answer--Georgetown has not been a relevant program in their formative years, but that doesn't mean that playing for the flagship of the Big East (and it still is) isn't remarkably positive. For these kids, one day they may walk into a $62M practice practice facility to watch an NBA team at their court, another day they could be sitting in Gaston Hall listening to a future presidential candidate. They play in an NBA arena and are seen on TV all over the nation, and most importantly, can earn a degree in course from one of the nation's preeminent universities and have remarkable career opportunities. Yet recruits routinely pass up Georgetown as a courtesy pick. We have to do better. Ewing gets that and he's doing all he can. It's become more of an uphill climb than many of us would have ever thought.

I too thought Pat and the practice facility would immediately pull in a few top recruits. I guess kids today want to get paid and not study. ☹️👎🏻

Based on what I have seen from pictures, our facility is really, really nice, but still not quite at the level of extravagance you find at some of the football schools, where athletes have special dorms, special cafeterias, etc. Georgetown will never have those luxuries for athletes.

Winning usually cures all recruiting ills. We haven't done a ton of that lately and that was preceded by routine flameouts in the NCAA Tournament. We need to get the right players, coach them up, pull an occasional star or 2 and WIN. If that happens, the players we all want will come.

Okay, I guess I can support a separate meal plan/training table in the cafeteria. For all I know maybe the athletes already have this?
