It always helps to have context right? She was interviewed yesterday and described the New Deal as an “exercise in racism” which disproportionately aided whites. The article I saw was in today’s New York Post.

It always helps to have context right? “The New Deal was an extremely economically racist policy that drew little red lines around black and brown communities and it invested in white America,” the Democratic socialist said in an interview Saturday evening at the South by Southwest festival in Austin, Texas. “It allowed white Americans access to home loans that black Americans didn’t have access to, giving them access to the greatest source of intergenerational wealth.” So basically she was talking about redlining...

Here's the history of FHA redlining. But I guess facts and history may not matter to some. www.npr.org/2017/05/03/526655831/a-forgotten-history-of-how-the-u-s-government-segregated-americaAnd an interesting view from the libertarian Cato Institute. The opinion notes that if not intentionally racist, the unintended consequences of the New Deal were, which is consistent with Cato's critical view of big government programs in general. www.cato.org/publications/commentary/why-did-fdrs-new-deal-harm-blacksAnother view more favorable but still recognizing the redlining issue. rooseveltinstitute.org/african-americans-and-new-deal-look-back-history/

I guess the funniest part is Conservatives acting like they don't know what redlining is or maybe they don't think it's racist? Confused as to how her taking about it makes her the ignorant one...

It has to be great to look at the events of the 30’s through the prism of 2019 and then criticize. That mindset makes it very simple to live in a state of being perpetually aggrieved.

Doesn't sound like she was holding a lot of resentment. Looks like she was just stating facts and adding that her policy would aid "distressed people first" The facts are this. Redlining was a result of the New Deal. It was carried out by the FHA and Home Owners Loan Corp. Both are government entities. It did negatively effect blacks/other minorities and hurt them financially. This is from the FHA manual That sounds pretty racist. The result was that loans to African-Americans could not be insured thus effecting them negatively financially. How does her knowledge of that make her an idiot? If we're going to go there, in this scenario wouldn't it be the people who don't know what redlining is?

Her idiocy lies in the unceasing desire to re-litigate the past and perpetually air grievances. I am no New Deal enthusiast but her attack on FDR’s policies ring as know it all Monday morning quarterbacking by one whose resume and life experience are quite thin.

That's definitely not what you were talking about when you said " her capacity for idiocy is staggering" If you read the article, and know what redlining is, it was pretty clear what she was referring to. Pointing out history and how it has effected different communities is how we learn to be better in the present and future. You're supposed to learn from past mistakes, right? This is a really weird attack tbh. You attack her for not knowing things, and now you're attacking her for knowing things maybe you didn't? When she doesn't know things. She's an idiot. When she does know things. She's a know it all..... 🤷🏾♂️

You've definitely spent more time on it than she did. I don't think I'm the one who is confused. A 29 year old person being ignorant about things doesn't save her from being labeled an idiot by yourself and other right wingers. Fair is fair. So how is what she said an example of extremely stupid behavior? Do you think redlining was racist? I don't understand what is controversial about what she said other than she is the one who said it.

It is not controversial. It is unnecessary and stupid to address the New Deal’s racist overtones in 2019. The New Deal was from the 30’s.

It's called the "Green New Deal." Juxtaposing it with the OG New Deal seems perfectly logical to me.

Nothing stupid about discussing historical facts and it looks like she managed to educate some people on what redlining was in the process.I don't understand why you're so upset about it. Ignoring history doesn't make it go away. When it started doesn't matter as much as the fact that It wasn't until around 1970 when redlining was banned. The consequences of that policy are still being felt right now, but you can't talk about it? Idk if that makes sense... Anyways, we've spent way more time talking about it than she did.

You are likely right about the expense of energy here. It is just tiresome to hear constant criticism of long ago action based upon today’s sensibilities. George Washington was a bad guy in today’s terms, but he did not live in today’s times. FDR was a bad guy by today’s standards but he did not live today. I may just be a cranky old man but it is really easy to look back and throw stones.
