Take solace in the fact, trust me. Trust me when I say that I'll be whistling Country Roads on my way home from work this evening...

Um, I hope people on this board are not acting like a duke degree has some sort of value. I might use it if I was out of paper towels or TP, but otherwise...not so much. Let's not get carried away...

Have people on this message board been to Durham? On the whole it is a nasty, worthless place. The girls (if you can call them that) at Duke are beastly... Yeah...I've been...been going to NCCU's homecoming since the early 80's... maybe our standards and expectations are a bit too high... I've been on Central's campus many times...Halle Berry is a 'dime a dozen' over there... Rolled through the malls...the Duke chicks look "mighty fine" to me... Don't let your hatred for the Blue Devils force you into making absurd statements...

Moreover, their lofty rankings are more the result of good PR and brown-nosing than any real achievement. The notion that a Duke degree is in any way comparable to say UNC, Gtown, UVA, etc, is laughable. But that's just my $0.02. OK, I can understand the hatred for Duke, but you don't actually think that a Duke degree is worth less than UNC, Gtown or UVA? I am not saying its worth more than a UNC degree, and I understand that you have several years of built up hatred for Dukies who think that it is. I am more in the camp that they are all excellent, and somewhat comparable, degrees to have. In the interests of full disclosure, I happen to have a degree from two of the four aforementioned (Gtown and Duke). Now, as for your assessment of the female talent at Duke... spot on. I spent three years at Duke, the majority of which was spent in and around Franklin Street. So I guess that says it all about the Duke social scene. But I must tip my hat to Durham for one thing: Bullocks. I am actually quite jealous of the fact that you can go out tonight, hit Bullocks and eat all the chopped pork you can handle and then roll down to He's Not for a blue cup. Of course, one night off and you would be heading to Bub's instead (or at least I would). And in order to maintain my board credibility (what do you mean I don't have any?), I vehemently rooted against Duke at Cameron for the full three years I spent there. Just no fun to root with a bunch of doofuses who actually believe they are as important as the ten guys on the court.

Duke, UNC, UVA, G'town degree...they are all very, very respectabeisntitutions with a little in the prestiege factor over each other. That's all. Pat yourself and anyone else who have them on the back, but in the grand scheme of things, they are all the same. There's 30k acredited univerities across the united states and those are all in the top 30..you're in the 0.1%...way to go, now stop acting as you've got a chip on your shoulder for not going to a "better" school than Gtown, UVA, UNC, etc. Also...no smart kids school has hot chicks. If you wanted hot chicks, ya shoulda gone south to an SEC school. They're hot chick factories, haha. The hottest girls I've seen in G'town are usually the ones from Visitation/NCS. Aaaaand before this thread goes totally to off opic hell, I wager that Marcus Taylor, Omar Cook, etc. are the dumbest of all. Victor Page at least had some size. Those guys had dodgy skills, were an inch and a half tall, and had the maturity of 12 y/o's.

It's impossible to say who's better and who's worse. Different people's opinions of different universities will be.... well, different, and thus its impossible to assign exact value to a degree. However the original post basically said that a Duke degree was about as meaningful as a blank piece of paper, and that really isn't so. I wouldn't say Duke's better than Georgetown. I wouldn't say Georgetown's better than Duke. They're both excellent schools and the degrees they provide open up a number of doors. I've seen Rankings that put Duke higher than GU, such as US News which has Duke at #5 and Georgetown in a tie for 25th. I've seen others that put Georgetown in the teens with Duke below GU in the low teens around 20. Both lists have Notre Dame ranked higher than GU, even though Georgetown has a lower acceptance rate.... The bottomline is, it's virtually IMPOSSIBLE to rank these things. The surveys try to substitute objective, empirical criteria for what really matters most--reputation. They're all just guesses and approximations, certainly not accurate reflections of the nations best univerisities. What we do know, though, is that a degree from Duke will definitly help you in getting a job... Youre a lot more likely to land a job with a degree from Duke University than you are to land it with no degree (which is what Shav will be doing once he doesnt make a basketball team). A Duke degree is extremely valuable--we can debate all day whether it's worth more than a degree from Georgetown, or Notre Dame, or Dartmouth, or anywhere else, but it is very valuable. That's all I was saying. Agreed.

I can't believe this thread degenerated from a bit of light-hearted Duke bashing into detailed analysis of largely worthless information. Sense of humor, people?

Who freaking cares about Duke. Geesh, save that Duke stuff for a UMCP message board. Hear, Hear! Besides, we all know that college degrees in general -- well, I won't go so far as to say they're worthless -- but they're not exactly gold anymore. A necessary step, but not too commanding in and of themselves. It should be like that old board game. Remember? Driving along a road, adding family member pegs to your car? You had two choices: you could go straight to work & you'd earn money earlier in the game, but you had a salary ceiling. If you elected the college route, sure, it would take longer, but you had much better earning power when you got through that road. And that game, of course, was. . .Hungry, Hungry Hippos.

All my comments are made "tongue-in-cheek"...Beauty is definitely in the eye of the beholder... I will definitely agree with you that Carolina has a better ratio of "Dime-Pieces" to scrubs than Duke's campus...but there are some QT's over at Duke also...IMO If you're not doing anything on October 22nd, we'll get together at the Duke/Florida State game in Durham and compare notes...I'll be down there to witness that "Hog-Killing" first-hand... Just let me know if your school schedule allows it...

Apparently, along with the Block Party, the food fight, the pub, tailgating, etc...Juan Gone was able to ban jokes, humor and other vestiges of fun from the campus as well. and Jimmy: Please don't tell me that the best girls at Gtown come from NCS?!?! That can't be true! If so, I am very sorry. There have to be some hot girls from Northern VA there. Also, UNC has much better chicks than any SEC school. NOVA girls don't go into G'town (or DC/MD for that matter) unless they a. go to school there, b. are dragged there, c. feel like wasting money on M St. so they look chic, super important and special, etc. when they tell their friends they left home. (NOVA is also annoying because it's al huge public schools or almost as large coed privates that people mainly stay within). Conversely, NOBODY from MD will come to VA because it is the "boonies" and "redneck." DC people are the worst though...if it isn't within walking distance, it's a total inconvienence, even though they could get anywhere they want in > 15 minutes! If your head hasn't exploded yet, you must be braindead.

For the most part, you're right. I spent the first 18 years of my life in Reston, VA and most people only ventured into G'town for a day of window shopping or a lacrosse game.
And why do large public schools make NoVa so annoying?
