Tombs win 85-71 over a "scrappy" Bowie State team. Hoyas height and overall talent overwhelmed the PG County squad. Bowie efforted the situation but I guess there is a reason those guys are playing where they are-closed it a couple of times but GU turned it up each time and pulled back out ahead. Hoyas had just too much talent and height. Does Geo Mason have a team this year? Don't see Meyers & Altman, their usual sponsor, in the schedule.
Greene, Mr. GW and the Ewing guy overpowered inside. The Ewing fellow ran the floor well and continued to throw down monster jams on the break. Greene continues to play well in all facets. If anything, he is seeing the entire floor well. He and Mr. Wallace seem to have a great sense of where each other will be in many situations. Jon W faced a better set of backcourt players tonight but continued to show poise, judgement and a great shot when left alone outside. Thornton's shot still not dropping consistently but one can see the guy's confidence. High, arching shot but rimming the right side and back a lot. Given his comfort with it, the shot will begin to drop.Thornton plays hard and defends well. The Ewing guy's energy is infectious. The man runs and jumps on every play. Seems to really enjoy the game.

Can't add much more; I got to the Tombs game late (mid-2nd half) after driving back from Philly for Father's Day! Hotel and I missed each other but Rich Chvotkin was in the house again! More impressively, lic68 was there so maybe he'll pen his usual joycean prose regarding the Tombs' performance.
Hope Egerson and Sapp are hitting the books since they didn't show tonight. DJ did make an appearance as well...

Whoops! Almost forgot the big news for DFW! Derrick Payne played for the Bowie State team! Looked pretty good. I don't know what he's up to now but someone on the board will surely enlighten us.....

As far as I'm concerned, the big story of today's Kenner action is Roy's improvement. He scored somewhere in the low to mid 20's this afternoon, if I had to guess and showed improved foot speed, as he was able to stay ahead of the break at a few junctures. I also saw some improved post moves, including a move where he backs his man down in the post, using his improved upper and lower body strength.
Keep at it, big fella.

I don't know who played for Bowie State, but they were no. 1 in the nation before they lost to Virginia Union in the NCAA tourney...
Union's tallest player, that played meaningful minutes, was about 6'4"...somehow they managed to win the national title...
I'm willing to bet that the guard match-ups were pretty good ones...but as someone stated earlier, they will probably never be able to match-up with the big boys in the front-court...

It is excellent to hear that Hibbs is improving. He is such a funny and infectiously nice guy off the court that everyone on campus is behind him. Plus, beast in the middle + green + bowman = seriously stacked front court

I'm willing to bet that the guard match-ups were pretty good ones...but as someone stated earlier, they will probably never be able to match-up with the big boys in the front-court... Yeah, now that you mention that, you're right. That's pretty much how it went. I was nice to get to see Jeff and Jon do some stuff tonight. Jeff's really interesting to try to describe. On one hand, his post moves have this quality to them like someone who's learned how to dance by throwing down some of those step charts. There's always a part 1, 2, and 3 that are down to a prototype. But it's really fun to watch somebody do a supposedly "mechanical" move and make it look graceful and effortless--something as simple as a stutter or a change of pace can really make a defender look foolish. At this point in the metaphor, I should point out that I'm still recovering from the varnish smell in McDonough Arena. Gonna take a little more than just that tiny window on the jerseys to air that bad boy out. I'd also kind of like to see at Midnight Madness if Jonathan Wallace could bench press John Thompson III. That kid looks way more built than he used to be--clearly endangering his status as a Drew Hall-like scrappy. Also the lack of an absurd hairstyle. I really liked the end of half drive and dish play the Tombs ran that gave Wallace a spot up look at a three pointer (which he made). Because it's always good to complement coaching in a summer league game. Otherwise all I've got is the varnish smell to talk about. Tonight was also the first time I saw Patrick Ewing Jr. play in person. I was impressed, I'll say that and just leave it there. The game was kind of a back and forth, with the difference being the initial 10-15 point lead the Tombs took to begin the game. Bowie sort of clawed back as the Tombs would go through a lazy spell for a few minutes at a time. But the talent gap was there and that showed in the end. A few pleasing moments like PE Jr.'s breakaway 360 dunk. Everybody got their money's worth, as is the custom at free events. ;D Yeah and one other thing that really bugged me sitting near "Chvotkinland" (I think Evan was there too) during the last half of the 2nd period: since when in the heck did it become socially acceptible for men to wear capri pants and pink shirts? For that matter, Yankees caps? Is there something I'm missing in the translation here? If you were at the game and sitting in the middle section you know what I'm talking about. Geez. These are your non-game observations on varnish.

I was there in Chvotkinland, but no Capri pants and no pink shirt. Watched the last half of the Clyde's vs. Custom Uniforms game. Clyde's features Hibbert and Cooke with Owens on Custom Uniforms. Clyde's won 80 to 73. The thing I liked most was Cooke repeatedly passing into Roy giving him chances to score. I was sitting right behind Roy's parents. It was nice to see that after the game Roy came over and set with his parents. He also went out and brought in a girl and introduced her to his parents. She was about the size of a biscuit, maybe 4' 10". Talk about Mutt and Jeff.
Again no player roosters. Supposedly, the roosters will not be available until all of the teams have firmed up and played. That will not have occurred until Saturday June 25th.
Meanwhile the Tombs added three new unknown players to their rooster wearing 5, 6, and 14. The bad news was that the new additions played like most of the Kenner league players of the past, that is no team work, grab the ball and shoot, and never ever pass to someone else. This was particularly true of number 14 although he was aggressive on defense and did score. The result was that the team play of the first game was missing and the final score showed it.
By my count, Ewing lead with 27 points including 3 threes, Green had 14 points with no made threes on two attempts. Thorten had 11 including 3 threes but he missed 5 threes. Wallace had 8 points including 2 for 2 threes.
Wallace played almost the entire game while everyone else got rotated to the bench. Coach Roderick must have believed that he was the only true point available.
The Tombs do not play again till July the 9th. By which time roosters should be available so we can identify all of these mystery players.

#14 was Florida State's Isaiah Swann who helped the Tombs win the semi-finals and finals of last year's Kenner League.

That's it! I'm officially dubbing a second phrase on this board--"Chvotkinland!" Hereby defined as the mid-section of McDonough seats open during the KL (now facing the officially recentered mid-court G for TV purposes) where Rich and Evan sit to partake in KL action!!
