Well done, ladies, and great response to the challenge of giving up the equalizer early in the second half.

Well done, ladies, and great response to the challenge of giving up the equalizer early in the second half. Good point, could have been a little deflated, but instead they battled even harder.

I did not see the first Duke game in pre season, but was told by those present that although it wound up tied, we dominated possession.
Well, if there was any doubt, we put that to bed today. Don't get me wrong, Duke did some very nice things. I thought their collections were superb---no bounce away from the player on reception. I also saw some very athletic players and playmaking with outstanding strike quick capability.
But what I did not see was an ability on their part to link passes and work the ball upfield in a methodical fashion. Long before things became desperate for them, their game plan seemed to be to hold back, let us attack and then boom it back upfield in a hurry for a fast strike to a runner. And they were quite good at it, almost yielding a result a couple of times.
Time of possession, time the ball was in their defensive end, number of shots on goal, number of plays in their box all were in our favor. When the score was 1-0 it seemed to be a fair record of events for the first half. When they evened it, thoughts of another tie and PKs crept into my mind. But within five minutes after that goal, our Hoyas woke up and struck back. Struck back with speed, precision, and relentless pressure.
As I said earlier in the year, there were some serious concerns with this team in losing the entire first string midfield, even with the returning quality elsewhere. But it gave every appearance that there was to be an exciting build up of non star players that meshed beautifully as a team. And that has happened and is happening. One has to love how when we have the lead there is little thought of bunkering in in a defensive posture. We keep attacking as if level. It sure makes the game more exciting even though it gives potential to your opposition of an occasional break away goal.
Conclusion: Very well done ladies. Keep it up. Virginia did beat Duke 2-1 in the ACC, but I worry less about our opposition's quality these days than I do our own team lulling into periods of sleep. The tools are there, the pieces fit well, the coaching is great so just keep it up Hoyas. I would love to see a rematch with Stanfurd in the Final, but there is a lot of work between here and there. Three more games to close it out. Go Hoyas.

And to witness, the Hoyas not only took two on the pitch today, but one is Jamaica on the hard court....A three banger for the Hoyas....The BB team came from behind (an 11 point deficit in the second half) I was told but I could not watch until our ladies had finished "Dooking" it out well.
Next up Baylor. UVa is good, so I suspect same with Baylor, but I worry less about the opponent we face as the hand we deal....Go ladies, you have gone beyond this year...Keep it up..

As for the game itself, The Voice does a nice job as always with the recap: georgetownvoice.com/2018/11/18/no-2-womens-soccer-beats-duke-to-advance-to-elite-8/A couple of things I'd like to highlight after this very momentous and rewarding day on the Hilltop (and in Jamaica too, I suppose). To begin with, we have the first goal, the one for which I haven't seen a readily available highlight clip. The Voice describes it thus: You know you've got an absolute offensive juggernaut going when one of your center backs, maybe the #9 offensive option on the field out of 11, is expertly trapping the ball at midfield and quickly sending forward a perfectly weighted through ball to where only your most creative offensive player can run onto it. Once that happened, you know the Hoyas were going to get something out of it, and after Paula did her thing, Caitlin did well to sizzle the ball into the net. Maybe she can give the men's team a lesson on that particular skill, given their plethora of skyballs today! Second... and I'm knocking on wood and throwing salt over my shoulder as I type this... today's match was a timely reminder of the major role that injuries - or lack thereof - can play in this game, especially once you're down to single elimination time. The Hoyas have dealt with some nicks and scrapes here and there this year, but they are able to go into these decisive matches with their best players available. Reading posts on BigSoccer and elsewhere from fans of UNC, USC, and others, it's clear that is nowhere near the case for all of the teams in the tournament. And it may have played a key role in this game: Duke did start looking very uncomfortable in the back after that play. I thought it might be because of the formation shift and the relative unfamiliarity of having to throw numbers forward - Duke and their U20 US National Team goalkeeper simply don't give up many goals. In fact, last season they did not give up a single goal in NCAA tournament play, only bowing out in the fourth round after PKs following a scoreless draw. Here, though, a missing link in the defensive chain may have been enough to open the floodgates for the Hoyas. Lastly... the following is why Dave Nolan is a nationally-recognized soccer coach and we are not: I admit that it must have been far too subtle for me. I saw basically bearsandbulls saw - a lot of direct play, trying to lob balls over the top... and failing to connect on most of them. A couple did land as intended, generating some dangerous opportunities, and Duke was able to run a couple of effective counters with their highly skilled and talented squad. But clearly there were some wrinkles to their game that were more like subsurface currents as far as we laypersons are concerned. I'm glad we've got such a canny set of coaches on the sideline that can detect and counter the stealthiest of strategies!
