OK...It has been dead here since November 22, 2017...And now the spring season begins....On the road for all five games, if correct....Start out this Friday, March 16 in the Shenandoah Valley vs. the James Madison Dukes...This is the post Corboz era, and exciting things are on the horizon...There is great experience at the forward/defender positions and in the goal...New faces need to rise up in the midfield, but there is plenty of experience there...Go Hoyas

On the road Friday at James Madison U., the 2018 Hoyas opened their spring season with an impressive 6-2 pounding of the Dukes. The offense was clicking on all cylinders even though a number of goals were left off frame. All in all a good start.

What’s the spring season? Isn’t soccer a fall sport?

The spring season is a "no count" for rankings, etc. but the players work out, lift and practice all year long, getting touches on the ball. Every year there is a certain number of games allowed vs. other schools. They are usually schools relatively nearby to keep expenses down. In this case it was a two hour bus ride to the Shenandoah Valley.
The players are often paired off with teams near their homes in the summer before they come back in late July to get ready for the Fall regular season with non league games into early September. Of late Coach Nolan and staff has taken on a very tough fall pre season schedule which helps with RPI to gain entry and seeding in the NCAA tourney in November and early December. Year before last our Hoyas went to the final four and lost to the ultimate champion USC 0-1 in the semis.
This year they play VCU next Saturday, then Navy, then Penn State, and finally GWU. The games are spread out more (usually once a week) in the Spring for the purpose is to gain some competition after butting heads in practice. Also gives the coaching staff to work and experiment in practice and games that do not go toward RPI to find out what they have.
Hope this helps.

Obviously this is the "off season" but finding out what we have for next year while keeping in shape and making practice tolerable with a few games thrown in. This Saturday the Hoyas hit the road for Richmond, VA to play the VCU Rams, a team that had a 12-6 record last year.
The games are nicely spread, but unfortunately for Hoya fans none are at home. Good competition with Penn St, Navy and rival GWU.

Game #2 last night in Richmond, VA against Virginia Commonwealth, a team that went 12-6 last year and only lost two seniors. Playing under adverse conditions with it being very windy and the field being quite bumpy, for a soccer pitch, the Hoyas kept the ball on the ground for most of the evening and took home a 3-0 win. VCU played a very physical game, but the Hoyas countered with an oppressive press to keep their opponents from getting anything going. Overall a good game in bad conditions making for a good, late bus ride home.

So the last week has been a busy one in women's soccer. First off, Kyra Carusa, from the national NCAA championship Stanford women's team has transferred to the Hill for her redshirt senior year of soccer. A grad transfer at that, she is one of two most important players that were ostensibly returning to the Trees this year. Imagine, if you will, in the soccer world a 54% goals on shots percentage. Yes, 40 goals in 73 shots in her career. She scored the fourth goal last Labor Day when the Cardinal beat G'town 0-4. She also has added eight game winners in her years at Stanfurd.
Add to that a 2-1, that should have probably been 3-1 with a disallowed goal, over Navy last night and you have a 3-0 start to the spring season. Having lost three excellent midfielders from last year's team one could wonder if this year can duplicate the last two, but it is starting to look like it might.....Go Hoyas.

Great news. Usually it works in the opposite way for us; GU to Stanford (at least in track and field).

I think if she is a grad transfer, she can play right away.

So the Hoya women's soccer team bused up to Happy Valley today to play perennial Big 10 powerhouse Penn State U. For 88 1/2 minutes they led the Nittany Lions 1-0 but in the last minute and a half PSU scored to gain a tie. G'town outplayed Penn St. for the entire match. So far in spring the team has three wins and today's tie.
And this is all without Stanford grad transfer Kyra Carusa who will report in the first of August for the fall season. Things are looking very good in Hoya Land.

So in the off season, with the spring session complete and a 4 win, 1 tie record at that, the WSOC program has three of its graduated seniors playing in Europe, and three of next years players honored with invites to the U-20 and U-23 national teams-----Megan Nally, Kaitlin Ferrell, and grad transfer from Stanfurd Kira Carusa.
Very nice indeed. This team looks stacked again resting up and prepping for the fall season to come.

So with the WSOC at G'town dormant since May, be aware the season is upon us----way before classes even begin. Camp starts at the end of July, first exhibition against American August 8, then Penn State the 11th (both on the road). Preseason starts with Georgia and V.Tech on the road, then the home opener against perennial power Duke at Shaw Field on August 23rd.
The team will be interesting this year. Much stronger up front with the grad transfer Kyra Carusa (if you saw her at Stanfurd last year), tough in the goal, and very good on D....The midfield has been depleted of superstar R. Corboz but has players with plenty of minutes coming back. With the tough pre BEAST schedule Coach Nolan and staff set themselves up nicely for a post season run if they can perform up to expectations.
Let this stand as a tickler to not let them down with your support even though WSOC starts so early. Go Hoyas

Admittedly I do not follow all of the Hoyas team-specific accounts, but I have to say, I think WSOC is doing a great job of using social media to communicate scenes from training camp and let some personality shine through. Kind of an anti-Hoya Paranoia, if you will. It's a great fit for this program, I think.
It's been a long, long time since Georgetown took the pitch without a truly program-transforming midfielder named Corboz (or, before that, Ingrid) conducting the orchestra from midfield. Will be interesting to see if anyone can step into that role, potentially via position-switch, or if perhaps we're going to see a different type of offensive approach and formation. I expect we'll see some experimentation and tinkering on the attack early on - the defense should prove Staudt enough (see what I did there?) to allow for that.

Good assessment Russky.....It will be difficult replacing the midfield of Knott, Corboz and Pak, but do remember that we are intact (Wenger excepted) at defender, goalie and the forwards. We have also added the super grad transfer from Stanfurd Kira Carusa. So the question becomes for this year is how do Shaver, Nizialek, Trissel and Nguyen backfill in the midfield.....So for scoring punch ,which Corboz more than provided, we look to the addition of Kira. At the same time we always look at our losses and recruiting, but must remember that all other BEAST teams lost seniors and have to back fill. I see this team as being very close in ability to last year's team all things weighed in. Wenger was a stud in the back line, but Nally and Livingstone are young and somewhat proven playing early and often. Could be an exciting year. Let me add, that tomorrow, Wednesday is the first game at American U. at 5 EST for those who can get away. I hear Coach Nolan is going to play each half with mixed teams, the ones being scattered between the two. Good time to see what is in the pantry, but connections with the ones has to come soon for a set up for the tough preseason schedule.
