On a lighter note, can i safely assume Mac has an invite to the Final Four Dunk Contest www.collegeslam.com ? For the sake of entertainment, recruiting and exposing Mac to a Final Four, I hope (expect) he is there. What an experience it would be for Mac to run around with Coach Ewing at a Final Four! I can only imagine the legends/celebs he would get to meet. btw.. we need a new "Mac McClung Dunk Contest" thread if he's in. I for one could use a little positive chatter after the way the season ended..

As far as defense goes, it’s the players not the coach. Recruit dogs and we will stop folks and rebound. I heard a really good college coach say he "recruits offense and COACHES defense". He felt defense is something that can be learned by anyone and that was his primary job in practice. I think there is a lot of truth in that. If a player has a strong work ethic and good athleticism, he should be able to be taught to be a good college defender. It won't always happen right away, because some of the rotations and assignments in college are much more complex than what kids in high school were exposed to, but it should be a skill that can be developed. I think it is harder to get a player who is not aggressive on the offensive end to become aggressive at the college level. Guys with the mentality that they can score on anyone and are always looking for their offense are the type of guys that become good college scorers. Kids are either aggressive on the offensive end or they let the game come to them, and I think it is hard to change a players mentality on that when he comes to college especially at the high D1 level. James and Mac are both guys who think they can score on anyone!!!

As far as defense goes, it’s the players not the coach. Recruit dogs and we will stop folks and rebound. I’ll preface this by saying that I am no expert on defense...I am just a long term fan who likes to think he knows what he sees. What I see re Macs defense has to do with his positioning. It looks to me that while he is playing man, sometimes it appears that he is not agresssively pursuing his man, rather keeping close but also playing some sort of “free safety” hunting steals and help. Sometimes this doesn’t look good, especially when he is late getting out to defend the three. Which can also lead to getting beat to the hoop with a shot fake. Not pretty. Thing is, I don’t think this “scheme” is Macs idea, I think it is Patrick’s. Does anyone doubt that if Coach told him to “get up in his face” a la James, he would do so, or try to. I think this is a developing situation; might take a while to get there, but hopefully Patrick knows how to best utilize Mac on defense....long term.

Why y'all always gotta be negative. Look at the bright side. If he's not eligible, then there's plenty of room for Cole Anthony to step in and play. No 3 guard lineup needed. (I'm kidding. Mac being ineligible would suck.)

I don't see a "gulp" comment here. It's April, after all. Ewing "coaches up" McClung and this is an example of it.
I'd be more concerned about those he isn't talking about.

Just when everyone is convinced otherwise, DFW defies expectations with a brilliantly optimistic post! Spring really is here! Are the cherry blossoms out?

It would not be unreasonable to think that Mr. McClung did not appreciate Coach Pat’s comments and was forced to respond publicly to correct a misperception created by the original quote.
While his plain spoken, unfiltered honesty is one of his great charms, maybe Coach needs to learn that sometimes discretion is the better part of valor.

Looks like Marcus McClung (Dad?) made a twitter account just to post that response

Where does this stuff get started and come from. Mac's my boy as is James and Josh. The sky is the limit, no less, for next year.

I have to say that it makes me a bit uncomfortable know a kid's GPA. I understand that it's the nature of the beast that general comments about eligibility/ineligibility are necessary but the drill-down, somehow, makes me feel icky.

I see what you mean, but I can see why McClung’s father would do that after the comment. I like that Ewing is frank and honest, but I think on occasion it leads to his saying things that are better left unsaid. Of course, we don’t have full information though, so hard to say one way or another on this one. Was Ewing trying to send a message to McClung for some reason we (and his father) cannot fathom? Who knows.

When I saw the comment I didn't think coach was saying he was a bad student. It sounded like Coach's speak to me. I didn't understand the reason to add "gulp" at the end but it makes that comment look a lot different imo.. I think he's reacting to that. It reminds me of when folks used to read a lot of extra meaning, or lack thereof, into Jt3's post game comments...
I think overall it's a reminder that we share these same spaces with players, family members, and their friends so you have to be mindful of that. When I listened to the podcast I didn't think it was newsworthy, or something I should highlight on social media personally. I didn't get the vibe he was calling him a bad student at all.

Who knows. Maybe Ewing delivers that message to all of his players -- and references it when he speaks generally. Kind of strange to mention it about someone whose GPA was much higher than mine my freshman year ... sounds like an unintended consequence was some calls to the McClung residence in Gate City!

Totally agree, it was the unnecessary "GULP" posted at the end that made everyone scrutinize that last sentence. My guess is this time of year Ewing is telling that to every single player on his team. Season is over, take the next 6 weeks to redouble your efforts in class and finish the semester strong so there are no worries going into next season. I would have thought nothing of that comment. Ewing's public interactions with Mac tell me he says things like this to Mac all the time more in jest than anything else.

Especially to freshmen, it is easy to get caught up in the chaos of the season, then after the season focus on what you need to work hard on to improve and make the team better next year. A reminder to focus on the academics the rest of the semester is probably pretty universal, Patrick is just emphasizing it again.

It's weird, it's something that should be private in someone's life which has been very public. I mean I took it as Mac's GPA is around 3 with some wiggle room, just because 3 is such a clean number but that's probably my bias in feeling awkward at this. Privacy should be something that we give to the players, out of respect for their lives. These kids need some privacy to live the way they want to and enjoy their time in college while winning 3 Big East and BET titles.

I'm glad Mac's dad said something... if he doesn't everyone is spending the next 6 months speculating on wether or not Mac is going to be eligible to play next year. He put the rumor to bed quickly, now everyone can move on.
