The final Associated Press Top 25 to be released before the end of the NCAA Tournament has two Big East Conference teams in the top three. Villanova leapfrogged Xavier into the #2 spot, behind Virginia. Michigan jumped up eight slots, to #7, after winning the Big Ten Conference Tournament; the Wolverines defeated Michigan State (then #2) in the semifinals, 75-64, and defeated Purdue (then #8) 75-66 in the championship game to run their winning streak to nine games. Rhode Island dropped eight slots, to #25, after losses to Saint Joseph’s (73-52) and at Davidson (63-61). Kentucky (formerly #23) and Middle Tennessee State (formerly #24) both dropped out of the AP Top 25, after respective losses at Florida (80-67) and at Marshall (76-67). Reentering the rankings are Florida (#23) and Miami (Florida) (#24); the Gators won at Alabama (73-56) and against Kentucky, and the Hurricanes won at North Carolina (91-88) and against Virginia Polytechnic Institute (69-68).
