for those of you who dont frequent hoyasaxa.com: the San Jose Mercury News is reporting that Gtown has canceled its second game of a home-and-home series with San Jose State...sounds like the Spartans are a little upset...the AD made 37 phone calls... 37 ...before getting a response from Gtown "As for Georgetown, it would have been the biggest name on the Event Center marquee since Jerry Tarkanian brought his Runnin' Rebels from UNLV here in 1991" www.mercurynews.com/mld/mercurynews/sports/colleges/san_jose_state/11898572.htm

Well, now I'm Editeded. We've got 2 California guys plus Sead -- who I'm sure has friends out here -- and we can't keep one game on the schedule?

There should be a good explanation for why we cancelled. Once we have committed to a game, we should play it unless something crazy happens. Simply getting a better opportunity to play someone/ somewhere else it not nearly good enough. I'm interested to hear more about this story.

oh i was hoping we canceled our annual embarassment at msg against an undermanned johnnies squad! No kidding. If my memory serves me correctly I think the Hoyas are 0-4 in games against the Red Storm in games I have been to at the Garden. Most of these games have been followed by phone calls insinuating that the johnnies picked its team from the fan base that showed up that day

AS a Bay Area Hoya, I too was hoping this meant no game vs. the Johnnies. This sucks. We had already begun to plan the tailgate and pre/post game festivities. There better be a damn good reason for this.

I agree with hoyalove4ever. I think this is very unfortunate. We should be honoring our obligations, and not pulling out of them because we think we can make a better deal with another team.

What's the upside of honoring this obligation if we can replace it with a better opponent? Higher RPI, better national exposure, gaining experience against a really good team...oh wait, those are the upsides of not honoring this obligation (hopefully).
Granted, I live in DC and see the Hoyas in person all the time, but the only reason I would be upset would be if I lived somewhere close to San Jose and was planning on going to this game. Otherwise, no big deal.
Now, if we schedule some other lame team in SJSU's place, then I may change my mind.

The upside is that the team (as the representive a well-respected institution of higher learning) conducts itself in an honorable manner by doing what it promised to do. College sports should not be treated with the same attitude as business, and even in business, breaking contracts is often a poor idea.

We've done worse and we'll do worse in the future. All in all, I think we'll come out of this snub of San Jose State University alright. Weighing the pro's and con's, this seems to be the right move if we can line up a better game.

Agreed. Once you make a commitment, you live up to it, unless something beyond your control comes up. Too many cases in sports of broken contracts and broken promises without our alma mater adding some more.

apparently the contract states that if we dont play them, we owe them $20k. So, by paying the $20k wouldnt we essentially be fulfilling the contract? Dont get me wrong, I would like to see the University honor its commitment to play them. That seems to be the right thing to do. But it might not be cost effective (maybe they were planning to play SJSU as part of a West Coast trip and the other school or tourney fell through). Perhaps the two schools can work out a game for the year after next (as suggested by the SJSU AD). I am interested to see how this will play out, and I am sure SJU's AD will let all of us know the results of his conversation with Muir.

this sounds very similar to a college football situation that went on a few months ago when Nebraska cancelled its committment to play against Houston in Houston and instead scheduled Maine, a I-AA opponent. granted we wont be scheduling a lesser opponent than SJSU. the Nebraska game had been set up to be on ESPN and everything. Nebraska fans claim that it wasnt their fault for changing the game. I hope this Hoya schedule change brings in another high quality out of conference team to the phone booth. or have them play at a difficult environment. for personal benifit i would like to see a team in the Big 12 so i could travel to root on the hoyas.

This might have something to do with the Wooden Classic situation of a month or so ago. $$$ situation probably changed dramatically if that was part of the same trip. While I would hope the game is rescheduled for next year, the buyout clause in the contract was agreed to by both parties. It is in there for a reason. If this year turns out as good as we all hope, a rescheduled game might turn out to be much more attractive to SJSU in 2006-7. Look at the bright side - before JTIII, SJSU probably wouldn't have cared if we cancelled.

If we reneged, could they really go to court and force us to play? Unlikely and not worth the cost. So they put in a penalty. Don't mind me, though. I'm just bitter that I actually had a game in area (1st since 2000? NIT run) and have now had it ripped away.

I agree that buyouts are only really there if the unforseen happens. I think in this case the unforseen has happened in that after a big first season under III suddenly some well known programs have come calling to play the Hoyas and we having our whole team minus ray back are willing to take almost any challenger becase III believes we are ready. The respect is there - now we must create fear - because fear leads to the dark side and the dark side is the EVIL EMPIRE - strike up the Emperial March we are back.

As a Bay Area Hoya, very disappointing, I was planing a big family get together at the Event Center for this one (I got every member of my family We Are Georgetown shirts for Christmas). Pulling out of a contract like this is pretty unsettling, I'd like to hear the reason. My guess is that we couldn't get another West Coast date, and it wasn't worth it nor feasible to travel 3,000 miles for one game against a bottom feeder in DI.
The 37 calls thing kinda bugs me too. We shouldn't be making enemies with other athletic departments, even if it is San Jose State.
Nevertheless, on the positive, unless we find another bottom feeder on SJSU's level, this will probably boost our RPI.

Well, now it looks like the Oregon game mentioned on the front page fits into the road schedule in place. Does anyone know what the Hispanic College Classic looks like? i.e., will we have other Home or Road games as a part of the classic? (It looks like Oregon will also play Savannah State and one other school as part of the classic).
