I don't think we know what Jahvon Blair is yet. Other than an a forced pass or questionable 3, he really hasn't put a foot wrong through the "pre" season. He's showing even more today. Jagan has taken the ball to the basket strong today, but Blair looks very confident for a kid that hasn't even played 10 college games. I'm intrigued. Juggy can play this game. He's very fundamentally sound and he's ready. Just needs more minutes.

Derrickson fouls out on a horrible charge call. This could hurt as he does a lot of the little things that make a difference. It surely did.

Game was lost when your best guard against pressure was on the bench down the stretch. I don't get it. I wouldn't go as far to say the best guard, but the quickest guard? Yes.

Three point shooting: Syracuse 10-23 Georgetown: 2-16 That's the story right there. We have got to tighten up as far as defending the 3 is concerned. True point guards and coaches know if you're not hitting jumpers take it to the basket. We still need a true point or two.

I can't find any number for second chance points, but it can't be good. I may have to rewatch to check.

I can't find any number for second chance points, but it can't be good. I may have to rewatch to check. In person it felt like they were all second chance points, except when Battle drained his threes. We just could not finish on the defensive end. We struggled early and again late without Marcus. It was so frustrating to watch us play great fundamental defense only see to a rebound slide through our fingers and give way to another Syracuse basket on a second, third, or even fourth chance.

In summary, we need a PG better ball handlers. Fixed it for you.. And a couple of true point guards would do. Been saying this deleted forever.

Rebounding numbers were very deceptive from the feel of the game as they only out rebounded the Hoyas by 1 after Derrickson fouled out and they missed most of their offensive rebound put backs. This game was a perfect example of how pre game analytics can kill you. They're one of the worst teams in the country shooting, numbers dictate playing a zone to force them to shoot over the top. The Hoyas did & Syracuse shot a season's best from distance.
I actually think switching back forth from man to zone and finishing the game in man was the way to play. Yes it's easy to say this now as a Monday morning QB, but here's why I say it; Syracuse is a team with very limited depth. Make them work to get shots on Defense. Keep the pressure up and force some mistakes and turnovers. Also this wasn't a particularly skilled Syracuse team. At most they play 3 offensive threats & 2 players who don't want to touch the ball 3 feet away from the basket. In a man to man defense you can funnel the ball into a 2nd defender and force the ball to non offensive players forcing them to make decisions and shots. Also Syracuse has seen all kind of 2/3 zone looks in their own practice so they better have an idea of how to beat. The zone allowed them to rest on offense while swinging the ball around the perimeter and also get the feet set on their shots.
Lastly after rewatch the game, the initial communication in the zone defense was good especially along the baseline but it would break down as the ball moved around the perimeter. Mosely, Blair and Pickett struggled to communicate at the top of the zone on multiple occasions which lead to several of Battles makes and the 2 threes in overtime, last one giving giving them a 4 point lead around the 2:30 mark that the Hoyas never recovered from.

Offensive boards were 19-9. So insert appropriate percentage converted and we're easily looking at enough to decide the game. I get that they shot 43% from three, but protecting your defensive boards is a more basic concept. I don't blame him, but the fact that PE doesn't consider Walker ready hurts us underneath.

ATTACKING THE PRESS. www.coachesclipboard.net/PressBreak.html All the Hoyas needed to do was to post Jessie or Derrickson at half court to break Cuses press. smh The Hoyas were not prepared for Cuse's press. Unbelievable. But with MD out on a bogus fifth foul we were stuck the last five mutes of regulation... Jessie, Sodom, Pickett any tall player?

We had a true point guard, but our fans ran our coach and Tremont Waters away. Hmmmm... Ready, set, go. This is an idiotic hot take. Well, deleted it's takes an idiot to write what you wrote williambraskyiii right?

Tremont Waters had 19 points, 4 rebounds, 6 assists, and 4 steals today and went 8-10 from the line. ...and he had 5 turnovers and his team lost to Stephen F Austin...I am sure you meant to add those facts in as well... Tremont Waters is still a true point guard and he does make his team/teammates better. So what his team lost. He's carried them all season and has gotten a lot of respect! /photo/1 "It's like he has five eyes," Wade said before the season. That helps with the assists. "We turned the page on our program tonight," Wade said after the win over Michigan. "Helps having a point guard like him. He's got the keys to the car." Waters and his coach took the blame for the loss. His TEAM had 17 turnovers. www.nola.com/lsu/index.ssf/2017/12/tremont_waters_aaron_epps_each.htmlBTW, Mr. Waters is leading the SEC in ASSISTS www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/statistics/_/group/23 WELL...

Wow that post looks like it took a lot of time and effort with the links...
Here let me clarify and continue to beat this dead horse...
I have not seen one person on here (or let's say 99% of posters) that think we are better off without Waters. Every single person here agrees he is an excellent talent and better guard than any currently on this team.
...but whats the point? Hes at another university, hes never playing here. Posting his stats in a loss, touting his achievements at LSU, what good does that do anyone that is a Gtown fan?
Ewing made his pitch, Waters committed to JT3, I respect that he decided without JT3 this wasn't the school for him, but please tell me whats your point?
I am well aware hes talented. I am well aware he has come up big in big moments already for LSU....he's not here. So every time we have a failure at the guard position were going to bring up Waters and say "what if" time and time again?
Good grief...
Are we really going to do this for the next 4 years?

Can't let it go, can you? I know you're a diehard fan and it's clear you didn't want III gone despite not only the poor play on the court but also the revolving door that was our locker room situation with transfers, almost transfers, and guys just plain quitting, but if I were in Tremont's shoes, ain't no way I'm walking into that situation, knowing full well how hot the coaches seat was.

Coach Ewing knew/knows if MD or JG fouls out we'd have to look to Sodom, but Sodom hadn't played all that much during the so called cupcake stretch. I thought Sodom should've played more to get ready for this Cuse game in case of foul trouble. Hope to see more of Sodom. Also, I would've subbed Derrickson on the defensive end after his 4th foul maybe 3rd foul too. I didn't see this. Did anyone say anything about this on this board?

Haha, you mean "can't I let it go? Or "can" I let it go? I did, but I'm only commenting on a post that mentioned Waters had 5 turnovers. So, they question should be, "can they let it go?" Hmmm. I'm not a diehard fan. I am a fan. I worked at the basketball camp for years for JTIII. Of course I didn't want JTIII gone, because I knew he had finally gotten what he needed. A true point guard, but again, our fans just couldn't wait. Our fans didn't or don't know how valuable and a game changer having another coach on the court (true point guard)is or was or whatever lol. BTW, Not getting Bracey was the dagger though for last season. If Bracey would've came to the Hilltop JTIII would still be there more than likely imo.

Unlike the Hoyas, Friars get a foul call on a rebound with .6 seconds left, sink two FTs for the win over Stony Brook . . . Sigh. Providence trailed 49-38 with 7:45 to play when Friars coach Ed Cooley turned to walk-on Tom Planek (Oak Park, Ill.) to provide a spark.<<<Why can't the Hoyas show some confidence in their walk ons sometimes. Butler was also good at giving walk-ons chances to prove themselves worthy. Hey, this is college basketball.

Waters is a player, but he's not a Hoya so we need to move on. MacClung will get the keys to the car. Sodom is way too raw to be a factor this year and maybe even next.

Glide, you have broken the HoyaTalk record for the number of times the same point has been made in separate posts, in this case, need for a point guard. Since the number of your similar posts is now 4,387, you are the winner of the Siberian sweepstakes. Just post your debit card and PIN numbers and you are on your way.
