I vote Coppin as the worst team we play which pains me to say because I miss when they were good under Fang Mitchell. Maybe Dixon can turn them around but they are pretty awful.

I think we need to either specifically work on something like zone defense, play the bench players extensive minutes, or at least demand the players be engaged and play 100%, because I'm not sure these games will help us. Last night's game was very frustrating to watch. I don't think it helped us get better and likely actually hurt us.

For reference, this is Coppin State's record thus far:
Oregon (44) - Loss by 16.
East Carolina (248) - Loss by 16
Cincinnati (8) - Loss by 43
Cleveland State (281) - Loss by 24
Rutgers (114) - Loss by 25
Central Connecticut (323) - Loss by 3 in OT
Some additional highlights on Coppin State. First, it's offense is even worse than Maine's. Overall, on KenPom, the offense is rated 347 of 351.
Effective Field Goal - Ranked 350 (of 351)
FTA/FGA - Ranked 345
3 PT %: Ranked 341 (shooting 25.8%)
2 PT %: Ranked 344 (shooting 38.7%)
Offensive Rebounding: Worst in the nation - 351 of 351
The only single thing they do fairly well on offense is FTs (20th, shooting 79.4%), but they don't draw many.
Coppin State's defense is a little better than the offense, but still really bad: ranked 340 of 351. While they have defended the three fairly well (some will say that this stat is largely random noise, though), they don't defend the two well, they don't block many shots, and they don't get many steals. They also don't force many turnovers (310 of 351).

Last night's game was very frustrating to watch. I don't think it helped us get better and likely actually hurt us. I'm not sure I agree. I think yesterday's game exposed a major weakness of the team that has killed the program the last few years. Complacency and lack of drive. A few of the guys played 100% throughout but there are enough players that simply take things for granted. Ideally you can use these games to weed out that behavior and to teach players to give 100 % every possession then they will be much better served going into the conference schedule. Once we start actually dominating and playing well against these cupcakes then they won't be useful. But when you are in a 10 point game against Maine with 10 minutes left, you exposed some things that needed to be worked on. |

I'd like to see us prove that we can give 100% against one of these cupcakes. I don't think we've really done that yet. Maybe against MSM. I'd also like to see us work on our zone defense. |

I agree we didn't need the Maine game to identify that issue. We have a whole 2016-2017 season that did that for us. But I think its still clearly an area that needs to be improved upon that isn't going to be fixed by playing tougher competition. I think we saw improved effort from the bench players towards the end of the game, specifically the freshman. |

I'm sure the closer we get to conference play PE will ramp it up a little bit at a time, but for now I like that he's teaching better habits. |

Hard to do because of no Walker unless you play 4 guards. That would have worked against Maine. Just pull the guy for a minute, grump at him a little then stick him back in and see if he corrects. |

I'd like to see Pickett bounce back after that ugly game against Maine. He looked like he was trying to do too much and started allowing the mistakes to multiply through frustration. Normal freshman adjustments I think but it'd be nice to get him back on track.

I think our records soley hinges on the freshman having good seasons.
Blair I am the most confident because he is a taylor-made 6th man. No conscience shooting, volume scorer. he has some real ugly misses but he can go on rolls where he made 6 or 7 buckets in a 7 min stretch.
Pickett, it will mostly be on D where he needs to improve. he is the worst defensive player I have seen in a Hoya uni in awhile.
Walker, I am just hoping that he finds a way to be more aggressive when he is in there.

Pickett will get better as the season goes on...right now, he's got a bit of that "what else can go wrong" look...but if he will just let the game come to him,
shoot it in the flow of the offense, and get a couple of offensive rebounds/putbacks and get to the line for a few easy points...basically, don't force the issue, but be ready to take advantage when opportunities come, he'll be fine...defense requires continued hard work...get a couple of steals/deflections with
his long arms and run the court for layins...though thin, use his length and quickness as a rebounder on both ends...doing the little/positive things will result in his overall game expanding...

I think freshman year DSR holds the honors for worst defensive player I've ever seen since I started watching during the Braswell years. Agreed on Blair. Normally freshman are supposed to go through an adjustment process like Pickett, Otto Porter and every other player I've seen. Blair acts like he's been playing college ball for the past two years. I love his confidence. |

An early evening start on a Sunday? This game could break some attendance record--in a bad way. Perhaps the thought is that there will be no other sports competition at that time--really would like to know the thinking behind this though.
