After 1985 I never thought I'd ever say a nice word about Villanova, but I must say I'm really impressed with what Jay Wright is doing. And very jealous. Sadly, I have to agree. Posted on other thread how impressed I was with Nova's win over Gonzaga. How does Wright find these guys and keep them 4 years?

We dropped the ball a long time ago and we have a lot of catching up to do. Pat is putting together some nice pieces. It will take a few more recruiting classes to right the ship.

Big night last night for the Big East. 5 teams played, some against strong competition, and 5 teams won. The conference is really strong this year. The Hoyas are going to have to show some significant improvement to win many conference games this year. Just don't see how they compete with Villanova and Xavier this year!!!

They had no shot of competing with Nova & X or Seton Hall for that matter but I hoped the ball could bounce right against Butler or Marquette or St. John's.. After watching them play last night those hopes diminished a lot..

Definitely 5, but not surprised to see 6 or 7 bids this year. Still early, but spot for BEast to be in with OOC about 2/3 complete.

I only see 3 guarantees (Nova, Xavier, Seton Hall), a highly likely (Creighton), then a few teams that will need a .500 or better conference record (St. John's, maybe Butler, maybe Marquette). Georgetown, DePaul and Providence won't sniff the tourney. I don't think Butler or Marquette will make it this year either. Big East looks very top-heavy to me this year. And I predict DePaul will end up better than Georgetown and Providence in-conference.

And I predict DePaul will end up better than Georgetown and Providence in-conference. The BE is currently the 3rd (very close to 2nd) best conference according to KenPom - just as strong as (probably stronger than) last year. I won't go team by team and predict, but it'll be ridiculously hard for less than 5 teams to make the NCAAs. That scenario probably involves us & DePaul (and Providence, I guess, if you think they're bad) to NOT be really bad AND VILLANOVA to be near perfect. And 1st round BET losses by the bubble teams. Personally, I think Providence will do what they always do and finish within a game on either side of 9-9. And I think the conference will ultimately get its 5-6 teams in. For reference, so far the new BE has the following NCAA bids: 2014 - 4 (BE 5th best conf) 2015 - 6 (BE 2nd) 2016 - 5 (BE 3rd) 2017 - 7 (BE 3rd)

Not sure how anyone can say Butler, St.John's or Marquette are definitively better than PC.. Admittedly though , I'm a big Cooley fan..

They barely escaped Brown last night. They do not look like a tournament team at all this year. It's not just the lack of Holt. Everyone seems to have taken a step back for them Bullock, Lindsey, cartwright all have looked worse than last year. I don't know what's going on up there but something's not right with that team. I 5 is the most bids the league gets with St. John's having the best shot at a bid. Don't see Providence Butler or Marquette having enough quality wins to get into the tournament.

I've watched them play several times this year, i've actually watched a lot of every team in the conference this season so far and I'd take them over St. John's.. You're right that they barely escaped last night but the important thing is that they escaped with the win.. Their 2 losses are to teams that will be in the tourney in March, this is what the ooc is supposed to be about.. What's impressed you about St. John's so far this season?

Mullin and how he gets his team to play. They respect him.

Butler can get in. Nice W against Utah. Beat Ohio State. They'll figure it out. As far as provy, Brown looked OK and was hitting some big shots. Provy should have lost but Cartwright was hurt and only played late in 2nd half. They had another kid get hurt and were pretty thin. I hope/think that this team figures out how to play and beat Provy as we never really could under JTIII. A new system and style of play may be just what the doctor ordered against Provy.
The flip end of that argument is a team like Cuse JTIII always seemed to have figured out. Hopefully Pat can adopt some of those keys to success.

I tend to agree with you, but since we have been so bad lately, I think we forget that it is not all that hard to make the tournament. I think 5 teams will easily make it.

They barely escaped not just brown, but Belmont and Rider as well. St. Johns has 3 ok wins in UCF, Nebraska, and Oregon St. Providence's win over Washington suddenly looks halfway decent, but overall St. John's wins are better. We'll know more about them tomorrow when they face Arizona St.

People tend to forget how big the bubble has been entering March since the NCAA Tournament expanded to 68. JT3 had a below average Hoyas team squarely on the bubble until a terrible loss to a DePaul team in the opening round of the BIG EAST Conference Tournament a couple years ago. Last season Marquette made the tournament squarely on the strength of a home wins against Villanova a Seton Hall and no just dreadful losses.
The BIG EAST as a conference has no awful losses. The BIG 10, Pac 12 and SEC are limping their way through the non conference portion of their schedule as a whole. Washington`s win at Kansas and Arizona State win against Xavier were outstanding but outside of that...?
To me it's crazy people are downplaying Providence for a "Winning" a couple close games at home. Providence will easily be a tournament team. Cooley's teams always struggle this time of the year ang gets better as the season progresses.
The BIG EAST has done a great job so far in the OOC and will have 8 teams on the bubble entering March but eventually end up getting 7 team's in the NCAA Tournament again and Marquette won't be one of them...

I'm not trying to make it seem like PC is a 2nd weekend team but I like the team that has 3 players who've been to the tourney multiple times over this St. John's.. Personally, I hope both make it..
