Just a reminder that there's another Hoya Hoops squad with a new coach this season... and they're probably going to end up with more wins than the men, despite playing a much tougher non-conference schedule, largely on the road. The women get equal billing in the new Thompson Athletic Center, and they deserve some attention around these parts as well. Hoyas cruise in the opener, leading 55-15 at halftime and finishing with a 52-point win, 93-41, over hapless Howard (the university on the other end of the G2 bus route, not the new Hoyas skipper). www.guhoyas.com/sports/w-baskbl/recaps/111417aaa.html

The Hoyas closed out the regular season by flattening cellar-dwelling Providence 74-48 on Senior Day. With the pair of wins over the final weekend, the ladies have climbed back to .500 on the year: 9-9 in the conference (good for 6th) and 14-14 overall. In the transition year of unexpectedly losing their head coach and adjusting to a new (albeit familiar) one, as well as dealing with the loss of one of their top players to injury, these Hoyas have shown some pretty impressive resilience, including handing the top two teams in the conference, Marquette and DePaul, one of their three respective conference losses on the year. Hopefully they can pocket some wins in Chicago and bag another WNIT invite as a reward for their determination and execution in the face of adversity.
Per the Big East TV broadcast, the Hoyas have the #1 recruiting class in the Big East coming in next year. They will also be returning a pair of seniors: UVA transfer Mikayla Venson, who has a remaining year of eligibility, and the aforementioned injured key player, Dorothy Adomako. Neither participated in the Senior Day festivities, which is a pretty good indication that they'll be back next season. I would like to take these as early signs that my prediction - no team on the Hilltop will benefit more from the Thompson Center than the women hoopsters - is coming to pass.

They also get back their best player - rising senior guard Dionna White. Down the stretch this year, White started taking over games. She is very quick and skilled, and she started attacking like she believes she is the best player on the court. Honestly, she is the female version of exactly what the men's team needs - a super quick guard who can take people off the dribble/finish, hit jump shots, and play tremendous defense (she led the BE in steals by a large margin)
I think the women play either Nova or Creighton in their first BE tournament game. Both good teams that they struggled with this year. But they have competed well with the best BE teams (Marquette an DePaul) down the stretch. They have been playing really well over the past 3 weeks or so, and they definitely have a chance to be a factor in the conference tournament. And it is not out of the question that they could win the BE tournament and get into the NCAAs. They just beat DePaul and barely lost to Marquette in the past week or two(the two best BE teams by a significant margin) and they beat Marquette by about 30 in McDonough a few weeks ago. They have played tough D all year. The offense has been better recently, in large part because White is being more aggressive offensively.

The Hoya women looked pretty solid in their last two games (including Creighton on Friday).
Next year, they also have two transfers that have been practicing with the team all year and will be able to play next year (both as juniors, I think), so there’s definitely help to be had. Great to hear about Mikayla and Dorothy.

Vinson only played 2 years at UVA, so she should have one more year of eligibility. But if she presumably graduates in May, she can play that anywhere as a grad transfer, likely the same deal for Adamako. If they both come back, they should be solid next season.

Hoyas will face Nova in the 3v6 game to start off the tournament. Given the way they've been playing, a win is very much within the realm of possibility. Chicagoland Hoyas, come out and support your team!

If anyone did happen to watch the Sunday night proceedings in Chicago, in person or on Fox Sports 2, they would have seen Cynthia Petke's body suddenly become inhabited by the spirit of Scottie Pippen. My goodness, what a performance.
This is one of those improbable, misleading statistics, but this is the first time the women have advanced to the Big East tournament semis since... 1999.
For real, though, I'd want Cynthia Petke on my team any day. She grabbed that game by the horns and didn't let go.

Hoyas knock off Nova 63-58. Watched the second half. Great win. They play DePaul tomorrow at 6:30 on FS1. They are playing really well. They beat DePaul in Chicago a couple of weeks ago. It will be a tough tame. DePaul is good, and the tournament is in Chicago. But they are playing as well as any BE team right now, they have a shot at the upset. Coach Howard is doing an outstanding job in his first season. they have played better and better as the season progressed, and they play extremely hard all the time. He clearly has a good connection with the players, they have bought into the team ethic pretty fully. With a number of their best players coming back next year, a strong recruiting class, and two Transfers who should be able to contribute ready to go - the women's program is moving forward very nicely, after struggling through a really rough stretch after the Sugar Rodgers era ended a couple of years ago. If they win tomorrow, they might have a shot at the NIT. and of course if they win two more games, they are in the NCCAA tournament for the first time since Rodgers graduated.

Nice come back. Down double digits early, steadied and took it to Nova.

Lady Hoyas are playing an exciting and uptempo game. They have beaten the top four teams in the BE over the last month and are well worth the watch tonight. Coach Howard deserves recognition for this turnaround in a season that was supposed to be rebuilding. Add the top recruiting class in the BE and the future seems bright for these young women.
