Can Derrickson now return to Georgetown? I don't know when the expected rule change from the NBA would take place, but the player has to return to school by 5pm the Monday after the draft. So it's too late for anyone from this year's draft. "College basketball players who request an Undergraduate Advisory Committee evaluation, participate in the NBA combine and aren’t drafted can return to school as long as they notify their athletics director of their intent by 5 p.m. the Monday after the draft. This change is effective if/when the NBA and NBPA make an expected rule change, which would make undrafted student-athletes who return to college after the draft ineligible for the NBA until the end of the next college basketball season."

Can Derrickson now return to Georgetown? Does not appear to be any retroactivity and, by now, Doc has no doubt violated other NCAA rules about $, agency, etc, so I am guessing he will be the last group screwed out of this logical reform.

This one seems well intentioned but I bet there are going to be huge problems around the process for determining who are "elite" prospects and who aren't. Major can of worms...

Also, the return to school if undrafted rule only applies to those invited to the combine. No clue as to why.

Also, the return to school if undrafted rule only applies to those invited to the combine. No clue as to why. I think this kinda makes sense. The problem with this rule is that if a player goes through the draft, their return is uncertain until the end of June. So the "invited to the combine" wrinkle effectively limits the pool to players who are likely to be drafted anyways. Otherwise everyone in college could declare for the draft and roster uncertainty would be massive.

So looking more into this and the most interesting thing to me is that the NCAA can use information found by other agencies to give punishments. So for all these scandals recently, they can use the legwork the FBI has done to punish programs without having to do their on investigation that is stopped by lawyers at every turn.

And what happens if a player goes to the combine and doesn’t get drafted... but his school has filled his scholarship? Can they then transfer without having to sit out a year?

Interesting take by a longtime high school coach on the rule changes and how it just shifts the problem, effects high school basketball finances, high school coaches overall and non powerhouse high schools programs in particular...
