It's a Prudent/Shrewd move. Typical fan overreaction. Ewing told everyone this yr will be tough. We're rebranding from scratch and Ewing's instilling new culture. I trust the process. 2 seasons from now when we're rolling all this will be an afterthought. Agreed. Not sure how getting beat by 30 against Michigan St helps anyone.

Very true, I don't know how long this has been in the works but if it did drag out this long why not just say Eff it we'll play? Do you really think the players wouldn't want to compete? Honestly, I'm a shocked that PE doesn't want to compete.. The players might have known about this since mid April before they reaffirmed their commitment to stay. Ewing has been tremendously if not brutally honest. I'm sure Ewing wants to compete but at the same time he has to be very smart about how he does things. Ewing's the greatest player in program history with an outstanding professional basketball resume and alumnus of the University who has always represented Georgetown extrextremely proudly to highest degree and a large portion of the alumni were disappointed when he got the job as Head Coach? There are a large number alumni/fans that are praying for his downfall. Look at the ridiculous threads all over this board criticizing every move or decisions he makes and he has yet to coach 1 game. He's swimming through shark infested waters! Ewing shouldn't have to pay the check that JT3 wrote in 2012 when this was a top 10-15 program. What this decision tells me is that Ewing is in it for the long haul and this is his program. He is not worried about the first year as much as he is about the 5th year. If this was his was his 3rd or 4th season and the program pulled out of a tournament like this then I would be 100% with you. What message does this move send to current or potential players?

That being able to be with your family and enjoy Thanksgiving at home while watching Redskins-Giants is a little bit more important then missing thanksgiving stuck in Portland playing a game nobody will be watching (competing with NFL, NBA) just to appease a couple grown men who are eating cheetos on their couch at home.

Perspective is important. Is it a big mistake? No. Will people remember it at the end of the season and beyond? No. But is it a mistake? Well, yes, at least based on what we know (which may not be everything). I think that's almost indisputable. First, if you're concerned about this year's schedule and don't want it to be brutal, you can address that with the other OOC games. Two (or three) bad losses isn't going to destroy a season or the teams confidence. Second, the tourney is exempt, so two of the games are "free." We don't get to replace them unless we play in another tourney, which seems unlikely. Third, in my view, the program (and PE) get loads of free publicity on a network we aren't frequently on. And the publicity, even with blowouts, will be positive. That's the nature of the commentary generally, and particularly at an event like this, which is designed to celebrate historical programs and surely will include heavily produced promotional videos. We'd be seeing highlight after highlight of PE. Fourth, and don't laugh, we actually could win one of the tough games. Stranger things have happened. Not likely obviously, but what a huge shot in the arm that would be. Fifth, it really does put your biggest supporters in a tough spot, if they had travel plans. That's not a wildly significant concern, but it does put a pebble on the scale. I'm fully supportive of PE and wish him total success. But he's going to make mistakes. That's fine. In fact it's inevitable. This isn't a huge one, but it is a mistake. Excellent synopsis, nothing more to say on the matter.

DePaul is not afraid to get waxed but GU is, never thought I'd see the day. I'm glad I hadn't booked any travel plans or I'd be double Editeded. Hope it works out the way PE plans it does. Come on now, we are in an entirely different situation than DePaul. DePaul has absolutely nothing to lose and everything to gain from playing in a tourney like this. Their brand has fallen even further than ours has and has been in the dumps far longer. No one expects them to win, at all. If they lose by single digits, they win the moral victory. Unless PE thinks this is a game we can win, which he nor anyone else really does, it does nothing positive for us. We still have something to lose. All those, "free press is good press" folks are out of touch with today's reality. The average high school age kids that might watch this game on tv are going to be less[/b] interested in Georgetown basketball if we get waxed by 20 then if we don't play at all, likely because they're not gonna remember that we pulled out of the tournament or at the end of the day they're not gonna care. Nothing good comes out of getting embarrassed on National TV. At this point, PE has no idea what this team is capable of, he's never coached them, never seen more than 2 or 3 of them play together. Put a different way, had this tournament not already been on the books, knowing our current roster and coaching situation, I'm not sure anyone would suggest adding it this this year's schedule. Is it disappointing? Absolutely. But as a first year head coach of a rebuilding team, I think at the end of the day, it's probably the right move for right now.

I don't love this from an optics perspective, but from a pure basketball perspective I think its the right move. As much as III's scheduling helped us his first 6-7 years, its really killed us the last 3-4. The tournaments and tough schedules only succeeded in putting us a psychological hole going into to December/January. We aren't going to the tournament this year so there is no reason to beef up RPI or our SOS numbers. After last season and all the turmoil, I'm not sure a cupcake November/December is a bad idea.

Talk about overreaction. No one is criticizing every single move that Ewing makes. They are criticizing the rather significant move of dropping out of a marquee tourney with good competition when we literally have no other OOC games scheduled. I think this is a fair criticism. If you think people aren't going to criticize the team this year for what happens, a Gtown message board might not be a good venue. I think we will all contextualize this season, like others said, but surely dissent is still allowed Exactly. Some posters didn't like the choice of coach, most were disappointed with process, but I haven't seen (read) one poster who wants Ewing, and the program along with him, to fail. Every decision Ewing has made has been criticized by some on this board. Here are just a few of the topics/threads that have been discussed on here criticizing Ewing/program: *Is John Thompson Jr. still running the program (making Ewing out to be a patsy)? *What Assistant Coaches he should target? *Why did he hire those Assistant Coaches? *Why is Orr recruiting and not a bench coach? *Why Did he wait so long to announce the hiring of Coaches? *The program Approach under Ewing? *2017-2018 Season under review? *The strength and conditioning program (Strength Coaches). *Why bring in a rising senior transfer from William and Mary who probably has to sit one/play one and whether he's on scholarship? *Why did he sign that prospect? Is this the best type of players Ewing can get (Blair/Dickerson)? *Ewing can't recruit because prospects are choosing other struggling programs instead of Georgetown (Waters/Carter etc.)? *David Falk close relationship with players is costing the Program recruits and the new reason why the program can't win? *The hiring of Ronny Thompson in a non recruiting role is a disaster? And my favorite thread of all time:
Who's Walking the Walk?
I purposely left out the PK80 decision because that is viable criticism. I myself don't find it to be a massive deal in Ewing's first season but I can understand how posters on here can be frustrated/disappointed. My point to this is Ewing has yet to Coach one game yet and every decision is being scrutinized/criticized feverishly without any inside knowledge to why these decisions are being made. Allow Ewing to run his program the way he sees fit and in a year or two, have at with all the criticisms you want. On the topic that no wants to see Ewing/program fail. Secretly there are some people posting on here who do. Look at some threads being discussed. "Who's Walking the Walk?". No one has the balls to say they want Ewing to fail today but if he fails to turn the program around by year 2/3 you will see them slowly all come out of hiding like cockroaches saying "I said/thought it was mistake to hire him/he wasn't qualified/we should have hired so and so....

Ewing said he was putting the brand 'on the shelf' when he was interviewed on this podcast recently. So that podcast was July 18th. Since then they've released an Anthony Mason shoe: I don't know if it's true or not, but can anyone see us voluntarily making the choice to leave this tournament on August 1st if Georgetown valued it's relationship with Nike? This is either a very stupid move based on pride - or it's something else. I found it really weird that the public statement tried to puff up a non-existent relationship with ESPN but didn't mention Nike at all.

If the returning players and new recruits knew this ahead of time and based on how open Ewing has been, I believe they did, it won't have any effect. I believe the current players know the reasons behind this move. Ewing hasn't been shy in categorizing this season as a rebuilding year. Zero effect on new recruits! Style of play and player development will be more important than the 2017-2018 schedule. No reason to believe this change isn't just a one off.

It's also important to remember, when we originally entered this tournament, no one expected the program/team to be where we are right now. We scheduled expecting to be competitive. I don't think anyone would have thought entering this tournament under the circumstances we currently find ourselves in, would be a good idea.

I think you are proving my point. This is a thread about discussing this particular decision. It is over-reacting to address that by saying people are criticizing every move Ewing makes and people are rooting for Ewing to fail. We can stay on point. I dont think Georgetown Basketball will collapse because we are bailing on this tournament. But, I do think it is very strange, disappointing and somewhat infuriating decision. To put it in another context, as folks are saying, we are likely not going to make the tournament this year. Given that, isnt that yet another reason to play some interesting, exciting marquee games early? I think people are being a bit dramatic about how the utter embarrassment of losing these games will cloud the growth of the Ewing era. I just think these are great matchups and a fun tourney. Bear in mind as well, it should be looked at in the context that we have no other games except Syracuse!

To the people saying DePaul has nothing to lose by being in this tournament, let me ask, what exactly do we have to lose? Have you been on another planet the last two years? Do I have to go down the list of times where we thought we hit rock bottom as a program and now we have a golden opportunity to play in a tournament like this one and we're saying, "Nah, we're good, don't want to hurt the brand" ... huh?!?!?!?!
Personally, I've been looking forward to this since it was initially announced and was happy that we were going to have a golden opportunity to get better as a team on such a huge platform and now I'm just relieved I didn't book my travel yet.
