Do we trust the Daily Press on this? It looks like a straight transfer, but it makes more sense as a grad transfer. So need for 2017 shooter unfulfilled? There's 0 quotes in the article, Georgetown didn't reply to them, their own coach didn't comment, and although it looks like Johnson tried to contact Malinowski on twitter, there's no evidence that he replied. I'm skeptical. I guess you could ask Dave Johnson on Twitter whether he got it confirmed that Malinowski will be a Senior?

Dave Johnson is the college beat writer for the Daily Press - he's been at the paper for 30 years. Maybe he doesn't worry about his Twitter handle, but covering W&M sports is his job and he's not likely to publish conjecture. www.dailypress.com/hrnews-dave-johnson-20130507-staff.html

I sent Johnson an email this morning inquiring as to whether it is confirmed that Malinowski will have to sit out a year or is it possible that Malinowski is graduating this summer and may be eligible immediately.

Here is Mr. Johnson's reply in full:
Hello ***. I have been told by people at William and Mary that he has not graduated. He was there for three full years. But I suppose it is possible that he is working towards his degree this summer. That I don't know.
Take care . . .

I don't think it would make much sense for the kid to sit out for a year to play a year. But are we really so confident that we'll have our roster stocked for 2018-19 that we won't have any use for him them?
I agree that I'd rather have him for this year than for next, but I do think there is some value if it's the latter.

But are we really so confident that we'll have our roster stocked for 2018-19 that we won't have any use for him them? Bingo. There will be roster churn. We have no idea right now what that will look like, who will leave, or why they'll leave. Having a few arrows in the quiver makes sense. Although I'd prefer Malinowski as a grad transfer for this year than a sit one/play one transfer for next. But if that isn't what it is, so be it.

He's a grad transfer guys. Can't fathom they would burn a scholly on a sit out transfer projected to play 1 year of backup minutes. Scholarships are too valuable. They can't announce it until he graduates.

What's different about GM's situation? Also, Gtown hasn't officially announced any of the kids brought in by PE so I doubt that's why we haven't heard..

What's different about GM's situation? Pryor was a much higher profile transfer and there was a lot more press about his recruitment from other schools (Gonzaga, Georgia, Oregon, Ole Miss, Florida), so these details were well known. Pryor also spent two years at community college and then two years at Robert Morris - a lot more possible credits there than Malinowski attending three years of W&M. When Pryor announced, there was an ESPN article. There's a Casual article about Malinowski and this Free Press article, but nothing else. This was pretty hush hush. I'm with everyone else, this smells much more like a grad transfer that we're trying to get in under the wire for next year than a sit-out transfer. If it's a sit-out-a-year transfer, it doesn't make much sense.

Why would the amount of schools chasing him or the number of credits needed to graduate change his transfer status? We also knew about Pryor & Dickerson because they stated their intentions as well.. The same way Alstork did or Cam Johnson from Pitt & many others I could name.. Seeing that GM hasn't followed suit is interesting to say the least..

Everyone is off base here...GM is a new assistant, so of COURSE he has not been announced- that is pending around October 1, 2017. Until then he is going to hang around Kenner League, help with practice, and battle Jon Wallace in half-court shooting competitions.

He is a straight transfer/sit one play one -- trust me on this. (Just like, coincidentally, Episcopal's Kethan Savage was when he went from GW to Butler; sometimes it just makes sense for the athlete...). I saw Greg play a LOT in high school. Game has a lot of edge/grit to it in addition to having a very nice jumper. The comparison I just saw on Casual to JP Macura is pretty accurate in terms of style of play. Will be worth the one year wait. I believe is playing Kenner, so locals can see for themselves. And DFW, Episcopal HS is in Alexandria, not Chantilly (as it says on the home page).

Assuming that you're correct, the choice, from Greg's perspective, is rightfully his own. From the Hoyas' perspective, we'll agree to disagree about the use of a scholarship in this situation and on this player.

Thanks for the catch and i'll correct it this evening. I used the biographical information on W&M's site and maybe that wasn't the best source in retrospect.

If that is true I would be really surprised. JP Macura is really good, hope no one expects him to be anything close to that kind of player for us.

They can't announce it until he graduates. Think this may be giving our "staff"--whomever that is--a little too much credit. At this point I think the safe bet is to assume that he is redshirting next year. And while it seems like sort of a strange move, I think we'll be fine on scholarships. Think we'll probably end up with 5 open for the 2018 class (Tre, Trey, Trey, Mulmore and either the last open currently open, or a transfer) which is plenty. Malinowski will come off the books for the '19 class along with Govan, MD and Kaleb. All things considered it's not bad as far as scholarship balance, even if the Malinowski signing is not a particularly high upside move.

My guess is the hope/expectation is that he has a workable number of credit hours which can be completed over the summer for him to graduate and be eligible in 17-18...don't know this to be the case, just makes the most sense to me... and I hope it works out this way because we can use his contributions AND we need the available players to effectively scrimmage.

Wouldn't make any sense unless he was a grad transfer.
He was fine in HS, but nothing from then or W&M would suggest to me that he's worth anything more than a last minute fill in scholly for 2018.
