ESPN kept most of the blowhards and really targeted the reporters for the chopping block. Really wish FS1 hadn't gone the same route a couple of years ago because now we have no alternative. ESPN has doubled down on rancid debate shows and now these weird "personality" shows. I tuned in to the Scott Van Pelt sportscenter for the first time last night. Seriously, what in the hell is that? He's giving strange, smug commentaries with a generic soundtrack playing. Who thought it was a good idea to build a cult of personality show around that guy? He's about as bland as it gets. I know that the cable sports bubble is a separate issue, but watching these networks flailing around is just painful. Didn't ESPN keep ALL of their blowhards!! I can't think of any person who does the 'Look At Me'/I Pull No Punches/Trolling shtick that they got rid of. The majority of the responses to the ESPN layoffs has been complaints about the people who didn't get fired. ESPN basically DOUBLED DOWN ON THE Deleted like you wrote. Whether you disliked ESPN for its political "leanings" and/or the Jesters/Buffoons who you constantly see or hear on its airwaves, you are still going to be disappointed and annoyed after the layoffs!!

What a shock!!! A "journalist" talking about his grief over layoffs at E_PN. Cry me a river. I will not misss the work of any of these people for five seconds. In fact it took longer to read this sympathy card of an article than I will miss any of the displaced "journalists" at E_PN. When a restaurant sucks, waiters and sous chefs get fired. Same case here. These people delivered slop and now they are out of work.

Honestly, I think him completely glossing over the shift from sports towards a more politicized agenda shows how out of touch he is with a majority of viewers around the country. Whatever side of the spectrum you fall on, ESPN is not the place I/nor many others who watch sports, turn to wanting to hear about any sort of social/political issues involving athletes.

This is representative of the changing consumer... Yep - and considering that this country just elected as President a loudmouthed blowhard of a bully with a limited understanding of facts whose primary mode of communication is yelling at and about other people, ESPN made some good business decisions here. Unfortunately.

Great news if true. Jaworski can go back to what he does best, shilling for the Eagles and throwing the ball to Rod Martin.

Wait Rod Martin didn't play for the Eagles.....lol.
And the Scot Van Pelt Thing is right on the money. Who does that guy have pictures of? Van Pelt's zenith should have been non-major golf gallery correspondent. And he w have sucked at that too.

Keeping Robert Lee working the UVa/W&M game would likely have resulted in far less negative publicity for ESPN than moving him to another game.

As if anyone did not regard ESPN as an abject joke of a network, they strive to remove all doubt with politically correct nonsense like this. We are fast approaching the progressive snowflake utopia the left dreams of.

I sincerely doubt you would be able to find a single example of someone from "the left" who called for this or objected to someone named Robert Lee - an Asian-American, no less, who as a group are badly underrepresented in sports journalism! - broadcasting a college football game featuring UVA. Not every stupid decision is the fault of your political opponents, you know Anyway, ESPN's slightly more honest explanation is that they were afraid the guy - and, by extension, them - would become the butt of a million memes/jokes.

So this was about their need to protect themselves and their workers from jokes? That might be sadder than the reasons I thought. What kind of thin-skinned, egg-shell society are we turning into? Pathetic.

Self fulfilling prophecy, Twitter is full of photoshops of 2017 Robert Lee as a Confederate General and 1863 Robert Lee in the announcer's booth.
