On Twitter, this is going big both because of the JT->JT3 connection, but also people going with this sort of take:
and well, also this :

I'm assuming the nepotism clause was not in place in 1998. Those sort of moves weren't an issue 20 years ago.
Also the JT and JT3 discussion can easily be explained that JT3 was not working for JT2. They were in different departments. Which gets past a nepotism clause.
Disappointing that this is becoming the "big" news on a day like today.

and therefore it doesn't qualify as nepotism...? I guess... He was an assistant under his dad for half the season (fall of 1998) because JT Jr. retired in January 1999 and turned the reins over to Esherick. Not nepotism under Esherick but simply a continuation of a certain insularity in the basketball program, perhaps. Yeah, that's what I meant. There's "Nepotism", and then there's "nepotism" (lower-case n). Nobody could suggest we don't engage in the latter.

Louisiana's nepotism laws prohibit a relative from hiring/supervising a relative subject to those laws. An exemption exists, however, if the supervised relative had the position for at least one year prior to the supervising relative assuming the supervisory position. Perhaps Georgetown can consider changing its nepotism rules along these lines. It doesn't seem fair that Jr. should have to give up a job he has had becauses GU hired his dad.

If it was that big deal to Big Pat, or Pat Jr., then he could have negotiated something in his contract that would have allowed Pat Jr to stay. I can't imagine this would have been a deal breaker for the school. Sounds like some people who enjoy complaining finding something to to complain about.

lastmanstandig noted how crazy this issue was on Twitter and will be there covering the press conference. He'll ask about it. What is this "Twitter" thing people keep talking about? I hear the President seems to enjoy it. I hear he also enjoys this "nepotism" thing.

Weird. Wonder if this is an existing university policy or was a clause specifically insert into Big Pat's coaching contract. If the latter, its like a bullet deliberately aimed at Jr. And agree that its either a joke or a reaction to recent events.

Thanks. Go ahead and give Pat Jr. a job in athletics fundraising or the like. Or just give him the AD job. Whoops, I guess that raises the issue in the other direction. On a serious note, this part of the university is unlike any other. If both Ewings want PE Jr to be there, they should seek a waiver from the Board or whoever is empowered to grant it. Its not like some groundskeeper always getting Fridays off because his mom runs the department

Is this the same fan base that has spent the last three years complaining about lack of transparency/honestly? Additionally, could be a coincidence but I think the nepotism clause was probably net positive PR. Especially given the speculation around search and family feel of the program. Georgetown has either gotten really lucky or they have someone very smart directing their PR initiatives.

I find it funny that people might not consider that perhaps the Ewings don't necessarily want to work with each other.

I think it's a shame for jr because he lost his job and he doesn't have that Long a resume yet. But I think it probably helped sr. I doubt he really is upset about it.
The guys wants to succeed, he said he needs certain types of people around him. Those with college expertise running a program and those with meaningful recruiting chops. PE Jr doesn't have either (yet).
I honestly see this as easier for sr. He can just say listen there is this clause. That's that.

PE discussed this today, on Mike and Mike. Apparently he asked for dispensation, but despite his animating and inspirational leadership qualities... he got turned down by the university president.

To be fair, it's almost impossible to coach at Auburn without being related to your staff.
