If you believe the rumor mill - once Peavy got big NIL and Epps renegotiated, Styles tried to do the same unsuccessfully. I wonder what Epps renegotiated for? The guy was highly inefficient and didn't contribute to wins. Our biggest win of the season at Notre Dame he didn't even play if I recall.

The Hoyas best stretches of play all year were when Epps was off the floor, other than the last game where Epps seemed like he started to understand he had teammates and may not want the bowling shirt award at the end of season team dinner (bowling shirt award is given to the player who is fine out there alone in a sport where team interaction isn't required and is meant as a kick in the pants or we are better off with out you playing like this).

That certainly leads to team building! I guarantee they are talking about it. I would if I was 20 trying to figure out my value. If Epps got $50, why wouldn't Styles ask for $40? Seems reasonable. Here would be my cap numbers based off the current projected roster: 1) Mack 2) Epps 3) Sorber 4) Fielder 5) Peevy 6) McKenna 7) Mulready 8) Williams 9) Cook I would have had Styles in there around 5/6. I'm not saying the players are worth this nor will they contribute to wins based off this but it is probably going to be cheaper to build out a roster around a core that started with you because you get the familiarity premium and you aren't in as much competition for young talent. Even after a break out year you can boost things up as needed. Going out to the waiver wire to bring in talent has to be the most expensive path to building out a roster. Even though they weren't successful as a team this year on the court, I really wish we would have Styles/Brumbaugh next year but I guess I just have to accept that this constant turnover is the way of the future. It makes the game much less enjoyable.

That certainly leads to team building! This is one of the gaps I have with fully understanding NIL, as player to player conversations seem to be happening (I know players who know the NIL numbers of players for other teams really well (or they think they do)). I don't know that teams share the numbers internally. The Epps did renegotiate (I would have rather kept Styles than Epps) and said he renegotiated and not said any number that may have been all there was. The other piece around NIL and different sources for it. There is team contribution NIL, there are the NIL buy an ad on many college sites with prices for each player for a local, regional, and national ad (if this money is on top of everything else), and now seeing NIL from boosters. It seems wild west. Some players look for NIL, while other are good with a good chunk of something and prefer minutes and exposure on a good team. This is pretty much like any where, but there seem to be few rules. NCAA and their new rules around academic eligibility to enter the portal, must meet acadmic minimums at least at the school you commit to, and can not play for more than one team in a season. It would be great to see salary caps and minimums for scholarship players.

Pretty easy for them to find out the market I know a handful of players who have NIL agents, but no idea how common that is. I asked three of the players I know that had NIL agents a few months ago if it was something the teams did and it isn't a team / player thing but individual and they also said only three or four other players on the team used NIL agents and most didn't trust them. A lot of this seems to have no requirements or protections around it. Much like early days of agents in pro sports and agents would walk away with a large amount of the player's money.

Which makes it extremely important for coaches to communicate with their players effectively. Behind the scenes, I think what this tells us is that Coach Battle's influence is decreasing and Team Takeover's influence is increasing. Will be interesting to see the dynamics of our coaching staff with Johnson on board.

I obviously get what your driving at... ...I think one could justify/argue that Epps is more valuable since he has 2 years left versus 1 and with the current roster a SG and part-time backup PG is more valuable than a wing with Peavy now in the mix and the current class. Again, I don't want to go down the line saying which player is/was better I am just saying I could see some justification in prioritizing Epps based off years left and depth. I think what we have to all hope happens is that with a real PG in Mack (fingers crossed) and Epps is playing a lot more off the ball makes him a much more efficient player. I know that ideally Epps would be an awesome 6th man that when he is on you just let him go off but I think we are who we are right now and Epps is going to be our leading scorer again but hoping that comes with reduced volume and better shots. Epps guarding 2 guards...I know...screams scary but maybe with Peavy a better rim protector, Sorber, McKenna and Mulready we can protect any deficiencies.

This flat out stinks. What I don't understand is where Styles will go and get as much or more playing time than he got this season, with a greater NIL package. I guess he must think it's out there. I really hate this "everyone is a free agent" system. I'm sorry, but what we had before was far superior to this and better for the game.
