Looking forward to when this title gets vacated by the NCAA. . . . That was a horrible game. No flow to it. Bad offense and even worse officiating.

The usual question--was that bad offense or good defense. I'll take the former.

Awful shooting. Awful officiating. Pretty awful game (at least it was close). Awful outcome (cheaters do win).
Seriously, the officiating of thisgame was a microcosm of the officiating of the past couple years. NCAA is working hard to destroy the watchability of college basketball.

Weird article. You basically had everyone from coaches to players on both sides complaining about how, minus any indication of favoritism, that the game's flow was completely destroyed. Yet the author continued to insist that the rule changes were a good thing for college basketball: There is a direct line between the calls Monday night and one college basketball’s best recent innovations. Before the 2015-16 season, in response scoring hitting a 60-year low two years prior, the NCAA instituted freedom-of-movement guidelines for officials, meant to reduce physicality on the perimeter and in the post. The rules worked. Scoring jumped six points per game, and shooting percentage hit a 25-year high this season. College basketball has grown more watchable and become a far better product, with better pace and fluidity. It started because officials called more fouls, and players and coaches adjusted. When you have 2 of CBB's elite coaches who can't get their players to "adjust" for the biggest game of the year, then I'm not sure the author's stance holds much weight. American sports as a whole has always been obsessed with the notion that more scoring = better games. That just simply isn't true. On an unrelated note, the one takeaway I had from last night's game is that it was a prime example of what a team (Gonzaga) is supposed to look like when it has been properly taught how to rebound. Williams-Goss in particular was fantastic all night boxing out a much larger Justin Jackson and several other UNC players. Watching us try to rebound the past 2 years has been embarrassing, and I'm really hoping having Pat around now at least changes that one fundamental aspect of our team's performance.

While the game was at least close, that was probably the worst championship game in years. The refs didn't help matters, but it wasn't just them. These teams were terrible offensively. Yes the defenses were good, but you can't tell me that Justin Jackson didn't get any good looks from three, and he missed everything. He looked like a Hoya out there. And the seven blocks of granite (Karnowski, who could fill that role singlehandedly) perfected the art of missing two foot shots. Yes, Meeks put pressure on him, but he missed a bunch of EASY shots. And I don't mean to just pick out these two players. This was a group clangfest by both teams.

One of the drawback$ of playing the Final Four in huge football $tadium$ i$ the deleteriou$ effect they can have on depth perception and $hooting accuracy. I think we saw that last night.

I also didn't like that the benches were below the Court. It'd be much better in an arena, but the lure of ticket sales is too much.

Why would they bother? There's, clearly, no penalty if they don't find them.

While this is certainly true, I think if you look back on the history of Final Four games in large arenas, you are unlikely to find many (any?) where the shooting was this bad by both teams. And while yes, these teams are both ok defensively, I don't think either of them would be confused with the Ewing/Gene Smith Hoyas.

Used to post here as just "HoyaLawya" 🏀
The Zag grad who went on to GULC.
A few observations as someone who was at the games in Phoenix along with eight family members. The elevated floor was a problem. You could see it was making player skittish even drink shootarounds and definitely during the game itself. Lumber was harvested in Michigan, finished in Idaho Falls, Idaho and then shipped out to Phoenix for installation.
Our big guy - "Shem" - had suffered a corneal abrasion during the Western regionals (we attended those, too) and we got the word about his having after-effects of some blurry vision ahead of Phoenix. He's normally money in the bank when under the basket, nice soft touch, and even properly accounting for UNC having a lineup better equipped to give him difficulty, it might have played some role. Not sure if it was the same eye that was involved in that madcap sequence of two Flagrant 1's being called by the zebras during the finals or not.
Anyway -- the season was quite a wild ride! And I'm STILL waiting on a Battle of GUs game. Thought for sure it would happen during the NCAA's awhile back, until Steph Curry staged his national debut with Davidson.

Wish they had won it all... I think we are going to have to wait a few more years for the GU-GU game... We have some rebuilding to do!
