Having just beat down a bubble team that we lost to earlier in the season, the Hoyas are clearly improving. The question remains, is it too little to late? We've seen Jt3 shorten his bench and we've seen Govan take a major step in becoming the player we thought he could be when he committed to Georgetown, but behind it all and what perhaps doesn't get enough recognition is the development of Akoy Agau.
Beyond being the heart and soul of this team...he's elevated his game to the point where he is filling voids this team once had. We had been getting killed on the boards...in comes akoy and becomes our best rebounder. We had been missing a rim protector ....in comes akoy and becomes our best shot blocker. He's become our best interior defender and is a strong finisher at the rim. He hits free throws, he's tough and does all the little things it takes to win. I just love what this kid brings to the table and feel good about the prospects of next year when he and Jessie anchor our frontline.

Agree B&G. I thought he was MVP of Marquette game. Brings it all to the table.

Agree B&G. I thought he was MVP of Marquette game. Brings it all to the table. His knee clearly is getting stronger as the season progresses. He has actually shown some explosive movement on a few low post spin moves past his defender. Next year, when hopefully the knee is back to full strength - he may well be our best all around 4/5 player. He already is our best defender at those spots. With a little more explosive speed/strength, he should be able to finish around the basket more consistently than he has been able to this year.

He's a vicious legitimate rim protector at this level, tenacious rebounder with long arms and hops, a great finisher, can handle the ball, pass and hit an occasional 3 pointer and a great free throw shooter.

Totally agree, he is doing the big things this team needed. Rebounding and blocking shots. MVP on those two categories.

From the beginning of this season, I thought he was an X factor. He had been named starting center for last year's team, just before he tore his ACL.
In addition to the strengthening of his body, he has said that adjusting to the new rules was an issue for him. He is doing just that and is able to stay on the floor.
I am hoping as his confidence builds, he becomes more of an offensive threat. He seems reluctant to pull the trigger sometimes, and I believe that he can score more points for us than he has.
If he is able to play consistently, combined with the minutes that Derrickson can provide, we may have some answers to our weak defensive post play. It has helped to have Jesse positioned a few feet away from the basket rather than directly under the basket where Akoy is more comfortable and effective.
Overall, they have contributed to the defensive surge of the team. It may be too late to position us in the postseason. (But you never know. I think it is important to avoid the play in game for BE Tournament. This team could have a run in them at that time.)
I don't believe it is too little though. Most discussion on this board has focused on the offensive scheme, but JT3 has clearly needed to change the way he coaches defense. If the Hoyas defend well as they close this regular season, that will go a long way in assuring some fans (maybe just me) and more importantly returning players that things are beginning to turn around.

Given the opportunity I knew he could and would prove himself. A player needs game action to prove himself and he is starting to get that chance. Sometimes players run into situations where match-ups are not good but he gets that. Was able to take Akoy out for dinner and spend the afternoon with him in Indy a couple weeks ago for the Butler game. He may not always be on his game and make mistakes but you will NEVER see a lack of work ethic. Something I think other members on this team need to realize. At some point in time I'm sure his offensive production will surge but he also understands that the team doesn't need that from him.

At some point in time I'm sure his offensive production will surge but he also understands that the team doesn't need that from him. I saw the the multi skilled talent immediately during his first Kenner when he was onhe same team as Tyler Cavanauh and Yuta Watanbe. The skills, measureables and high basketball IQ were all there. It was too bad that he was derailed by injuries because we really could have used him those years especially since he's our only legit rim protecter. He also picks up things fast as he's always looking to pass and is already one of the better back door passers even with less experience and PT.

Akoy has really stepped up of late and his physical defense has been a key to the recent surge (4-2 in our last 6 games). Still would like him to avoid the 1-2 times a game he gets outside of his lane on offense, usually leading to a turnover. But I agree with the comment on work ethic, seems like a great kid. How many more years of eligibility do we think he'll have? Just one year after this one or two?
