BC's Sean Williams suspended until January at least after being arrested on campus for possession of and smoking marijuana. Can't find a link yet but this was reported on WEEI sports radio and local news tonight. Nice to see that he'll potentially be back for the conference season. see below... Oof. Some reports say that he may be gone for good. Poor BC!
But, seriously, poor Sean Williams. That kid has lottery pick written all over him, and it would be a shame for him to throw that away.

Boston Globe: Williams suspended after drug arrest By Michael Vega, Globe Staff | May 21, 2005www.boston.com/sports/colleges/mens_basketball/articles/2005/05/21/williams_suspended_after_drug_arrest/Also, news in this article that Akida McLain - another promising rising sophomore - has run afoul of the law... is BC becoming Fresno State East? Boston Herald: No felony for McLain: 'Very minor' charges cited By Mike Shalin Thursday, May 19, 2005sports.bostonherald.com/college/view.bg?articleid=83758Boston Herald: BC's Williams arrested, suspended By Mike Shalin Saturday, May 21, 2005sports.bostonherald.com/college/view.bg?articleid=84091...as usual, Mike Shalin has better sources than most... While one BC source thought Williams' days at the school are over, Skinner indicated he has an open mind. ``If he follows through with whatever he needs to do, then we'll more than welcome him back,'' he said. Added Skinner: ``He's extremely disappointed. He's let down a lot of people - himself and his family. I know I've got a stake in this but I'll be fine - he's letting himself down and letting his family down. He's obviously immature. It's clear he didn't handle this responsibility as well as he should have.'' It is a shame that Duke does not follow this policy. If they did, at least one of their current players, who is a significant contributor, would be suspended.

From what I've heard, it is a guy who Maryland fans are especially fond of. But did something happen recently? I know that he has been caught hanging with the Buddha before...if it happened again and he's still on the team...wow.

To be honest, I haven't followed the story since the article in the Duke student newspaper. At the same time, where there's smoke... We shouldn't be under any illusions about Duke. There are some aspects of their program that aren't clean.

What are the penalties for a normal student who gets busted for the same thing at Duke or most other places?
And out of curiousity...in your opinion do you think student athletes should be held higher or at the same level as regular ones?

JimmyHoya asks the right question. Let's say the kid is on academic scholarship. Should being caught with pot result in being tossed from school? I really don't think so.
Moreover, I don't think there's a school in the nation outside of maybe BYU or Utah that can cast stones (ha!) on this question. It's just naive to think otherwise. I'm not condoning it, and there should be reprecussions, but if Williams is really going to get tossed from the team for simple possession, that's way too harsh, IMO.
I bet there's more to this story.

Having more than a couple friends caught for possession on campus...I can tell you the punishment is pretty light. The most extreme punishment was that one of my friends was forced to change his study abroad plans from a year abroad to merely spring semester...which is a real bummer, but not so bad in the long run. Another friend had to do counciling. A third got moved out of his dorm and sent to a "troubled" kids dorm...I believe Copley....but I can't remember...basically they split him away from his roommates and put him in with another troublemaker. Good job admin. Really straightened him out.
My point is, gtown is really lax on that front as well, if you look at the regular student population, so let's not start throwing stones.

Any Big East news going on, since we play in the Big East Conference. Just wondering.

Bad ACC news is better than no news.

The Big East, save for the schools you mentioned above, wouldn't make headlines like the classless (in more ways the one) ACC. ;D Thanks for reminding me.

I think its pretty silly that possession of a personal amount of pot could get someone booted from a school or team on first offense. Was he dealing?

May have been his first criminal offense, but I think I read that he was on thin ice already because of a bunch of academic/behavioral instances. I definitely agree that a misdemeanor possession charge wouldn't alone merit expulsion.
He's gone for the first semester next year, and could be invited back.
