$1.5 million actually doesn't seem like that much to me. I'm surprised that Coach K doesn't get even more from Duke. I'm sure the other corporate sponsors pay him more, but from the standpoint of what he has done for that program, $1.5 million doesn't strike me as excessive at all.
Seems rather paltry to myself as well. He is afterall not just a basketball coach. He's a life coach, a leader, a guy whose job it is to inspire others. And if he had done a Mastercard commercial rather than an Amex one, his value to Duke University and ESPN would have been "Priceless"

It does seem a little low for Coach K's pay - perhaps he gets a seperate salary as the head of the Coach K Center for Ethics - or whatever that hilariously named school is at Duke ...
Speaking of K, this article in the Sunday Raleigh News & Observer on the season Duke would rather forget...literally.
The losses from 1994-95 were simply wiped off Krzyzewski's record and the school does not even list Pete Gaudet as a former coach...it was like 1995 never happened. (That's convenient.)
does this include his shoe deal and television deal? if it does not this is extremly low. i know that bill self at kansas makes over two million that includes incentives, shoe deal, and his tv show. its pretty funny how the contract works for Self, football coach Mark Mangino and womens coach Bonnie Hendrickson. they all have the same base salary. Self receives something like 5k for beating rivals, as does MAngino and Hendrickson. Mangino even receives 5k for each time his football team is on tv. because all of these incentives are the same self is able to obviously rack up more money because his team is more successful.
an interesting way to do it, but these coaches often have a lot of money riding on each individual game. each coach also receives two lincoln navigators (his and hers) so they certainly are living alright.

I'm always amazed at the esteem K is held in. He is one of the worst coaches I have ever witnessed in a major sport when it comes to questions of integrity. This guy would kill his mom if he could get another Final Four run for it. His antics on the side-lines against officials are unbelievable and he is essentially never penalized on the court and definitely not off it either. Meanwhile he is willing to use his cachet to fund-raise for Liz Dole and do the AmEx commercial and Duke has the gall to name an ETHICS Center after him. I guess, ethics in this context is defined as "might makes right."
