This looks like a game Esh would have scheduled.

After last year, winning games like these at this point of the year is far more important than the game we just choked away.

Win, get back on track, then onto a Oregon team that also lost today...fortunately we'll play them before the new polls come out.

That's why it's silly to have these as "preliminary" games to these tournaments. It's a farce because the high-major team always goes to the main tournament even if they lose. It's happened before. I have no idea why they do it - probably for TV to make more money.

I was only joking with you and I know. It's like the AAU tournaments, they guarantee us at least three games.

I mean, I can maybe see it in AAU, I just don't think high-major teams have problems scheduling these types of opponents. Unless it's the sort of situation where the tournament pays for them to visit Georgetown instead of Georgetown paying? I guess saving money would be a pretty big incentive for most schools.

I think the economics may be a big part but also the better schools want at least one win out of the tournament so they don't tarnish their early season record too much may have something to do with it.

Since the bigger schools have no choice but to play the games, I have to believe the tournament pays at least something to the smaller schools.

Bad losses crush your RPI and stand out in the selection process more than decent wins or losses. If we avoid the Radford-like losses of last year, that will really help us as we move into conference time.

After watching the new pressing style defense for 2 games, I'd like to see more of a passive 1-2-1-1 press. Especially against a team with similar athletes. Use it more to take 8-10 seconds off the shot clock and defend less in the half court. Pick and choose the spots to aggressively trap the initial inbound pass. It didn't take Maryland long to start breaking the press consistently. Against lesser opponents, like this game tomorrow, a more aggressive press will yield more turnovers.
With that said, if we don't fix our ball screen defense, this is going to be a long year having to go up against the Brunson, Sumner, and Watson's of the world. I'm also hopeful to see much better half court offense in this game. I think we need to use more ball screens, especially for LJ.

And having watched Josh Hart take apart Purdue I am feeling very uncomfortable about our BE prospects. Folks, the game today is all about dribble penetration and pass it out for a 3. At times I feel like we are bringing a knife to a gun fight.

A plastic knife at that or maybe a spork. I look at this as a stopgap year with Pryor in charge . It looks like we have some good pieces coming next year and we need to land some some quality in '18 to keep things going. Future looks bright.

Arkansas State's starting point guard Donte Thomas is from D.C., he attended Ballou High School and was a 1st Team All Met in 2010...same year as Markel Starks!!! Yeah, you read that right. He had top 50-75 type of talent in high school, but grades were an issue and kept most of the BCS schools away. I recall that he held his own with highly-rated guard Josh Selby when Ballou and Lake Clifton played twice during the 09-10 season. He eventually ended up at Arkansas State last year. He's averaging 10PPG/8.5Ast/6.5Rebs in Arkansas State's first 2 games.

I dont think the press caused a single TO against Maryland to be honest.
