I've heard it discussed on the board but am still confused as to how this works. My understanding is that a scholarship offer is renewed every year. So, in theory JT3 could have told everyone no the team that they are no longer on scholarship and brought in an entirely new team. Is this really the case? That, in theory, JT3 could pick and chose who he would want back, etc?
Also, if that is the case, wouldn't he be able to make schollies available if need be. Don't get me wrong, I don't think we should pull the scholarship from anyone... the message that sends and the political and personal (for the players) ramifications, along with the morality are all awful. But j

You're right: schollies are technically renewed every year. So JT3 could kick off the entire team and recruit 13 new players.
In reality, it looks real bad to be considered a school that takes away schollies. Washington is getting a lot of bad press because Romar recruited 7 kids asked a current player to stay as a walk-on. Looks very shabby.
However, in the case of a coaching change, players almost always leave and it's not considered as negatively since the coach didn't recruit these players. And yes, without engaging in speculation: people are battling for schollies on our team right now.

From everything I've read on this board in links posted to NCAA rules, it appears any player who has received a scholarship remains a counter. This would mean that even if a coach wanted to take a player off a scholarship, he wouldn't be able to give it to another, because the first guy is still a counter. Am I mistaken?

You are correct -- but the condition is if the player stays on the team. So you could kick a player off the team and use his scholarship, but you can't ask revoke a scholarship and keep a player as a walk-on.

Is Owens officially back? I noticed on the recruiting page he was now filling a spot so I am assuming something changed when I wasn't paying attention.

With Reed and Cornelio vacating two scholarships, no 2005 recruits really left out there, and Owens being gone in time for the 2006 recruits no matter what, many of us assumed that he'd be back. I suppose JT or he may want to move on, but I think there is a better chance he is back.

I'd be willing to put a lot of money on it that he'll be back. Talked to a very good source yesterday at the lax game, they indicated DJ is dying to come back and probably will be back.
