Flew from the west coast because I had to see the new guys for myself. I caught some of the action on Friday and Sunday.
- Rodney Pryor is the real deal and the reason this team will be back in the tourney this year. He is a bucket getter and was a better shooter tan I thought he was going to be. He is such a great athlete that he makes plays look very easy which we are not used to. One play in particular stood out. He got a pass that carried him toward the baseline and he was able to stop his momentum take one step and dunk the ball with ease. He is also a willing passer although sometimes he is too unselfish and makes a pass that puts his teammate is a tough spot to score when he probably should just try to finish himself. Maybe thats just a product of Kenner. The only knock I had on him was he was not as good a rebounder as someone as athletic as him should be. He is definitely a player with NBA athleticism and skill but we do have to remember he will be 24 at the end of the season and while that is great for us the NBA doesn't have a habit of drafting 24 year olds unless they have a completely dominant season like Buddy Hield just did although that is not out of the question.
- Jagan Mosely was the player that I was most excited about when all was said and done simply because we get him for 4 years and not 1. He does everything right and will be at worst an All Big East 2nd teamer when his time is done. He can get to the bucket and finish way better than any freshman should be able to. He plays within the flow of the game. He is a solid defender but one thing I didn't like was he was picking up guys very early and he wasn't quite quick enough to stay in front of them so they would get him on their hip and he couldn't get back in front of them.
- Marcus Derrickson was doing just about everything. He struggled on Friday night putting the ball in the basket but he was getting in good spots and working on his inside and outside game. He had to guard some big guys in the post and while he didn't shut them down by any means he was serviceable.
- LJ Peak is really good and I just wish he had more rotation on his shot because I would be confident it would go in more often.
- Issac Copeland is what he has been for the past couple years. The good and the bad. He can score but I just wish he was a better lateral defender and could put on some size but it is what it is.
- Jonathan Mulmore I only got to see the last few minutes of a game so I can't give much other than to say he can definitely get to the rim.
- Kaleb Johnson looks to be similar to last year but a little better on offense. He should probably fill the senior Aaron Bowen roll.
- Tre Campbell is in a bad spot on this team. He is a fine player but he has been passed by on this team by Mosely and Mulmore. I feel bad for him as he is one of those guy that could transfer down ala Bennimon and thrive. He is just to out of control to be a good PG. I will say though he rebounded incredible for a guard.
- The centers. Jesse Govan has passed Bradley and should definitely start because he will create more spacing with these new guards that can get to the bucket. That being said from what I saw I don't think wither of these guys is much different than they were last year with the exception being Jesse is in better shape.
As for the starting lineup I think it will be Mulmore, LJ, Pryor, Copeland, Govan. I am not sure that is what I would have but I think that is what it will be. I would love to have a death lineup of Derrickson at the 5 because that team would have all the spacing and shooting ability that they couldn't be stopped. The problem would be interior defense. Copland can't stay in front of anyone and while Marcus holds his own on the block he is not the rim protector needed to play help defense. I would also not be surprised to see Derrickson eventually beat out Copeland as he is the better all around player.
Some Kenner fun
- During Friday nights Tombs game the incompetence was on full display. It was a tight game throughout but Tombs got all the calls. It was tight late and Marcus hit a clear 2 pointer and the announcer said Derrickson for 3 and the scoreboard operator gave him a 3. The officials told the scorers table it was a 2 but they never bothered changing it. There was also a play very late where Marcus clearly double dribbled to get a key bucket. I guess getting Tombs the undefeated season was really important to the powers that be.

Mulmore is the answer to leading this team. Yes, I believe Jagan can the pg position but hes not a true point guard. He does attack though.

Trust me Glides, I know the keys to the car are in Mulmore's hands. Check out my 3 plus week discussion with YaBoy earlier this spring/summer in Tre Campbell's thread (I believe) where I went hard for Mulmore as the this upcoming season starting PG. I love the DNA of Mulmore's game and absolutely believe he's the starting PG the next 2 years. I said that Jagan is the long term answer at the PG. He has the next 2 seasons to grow into the position and takeover his junior year. Jagan IMO has the right mindset and physical attributes to eventually be a stud at the Point.

Mulmore is the answer to leading this team. Yes, I believe Jagan can the pg position but hes not a true point guard. He does attack though. Mulmore is the one to do it this upcoming season IMO based upon his experience. But you can't convince me that Mosely isn't the one with the most upside. The kid appears to be growing into a pg right in front of people's eyes. He may not be as pure a pg as Mulmore but so what? The position is changing. What is required of pgs now is different from previous years, previous generations. In today's game Iverson would be accepted as a pg even despite jacking up the rock too much. That dude was averaging 6 to 7 assists per game despite playing the 2-guard in Larry Brown's system and playing alongside teammates who could not shoot or score. Anyway to get back on track it isn't as if Mosely is hunting his shot every time down the court or anything. The guy knows how to play within a system and look for teammates. But he has been showing he has the speed and the developing handle to play the one spot. Not to mention he is also showing he can find his teammates thanks to his height and make the pass. You add his intelligence and his length and athleticism that allow him to play defense on one end and explode on offense at the other and you have a straight up steal who won't be denied his minutes this season. By his soph season he will be battling for that PG spot although he is capable of playing in the backcourt as a two.

He pulled down 8 rebounds per game last season and had some nice showings on that front in earlier KL games. His rebounding will be fine. Some do forget that compared to his Hoya teammate he is pretty much a man among boys simply by his age alone. Nonetheless if he is able to live up to the hype this season he WILL make an NBA roster, possibly with someone taking a chance on him in the second round. Could be a steal. Couldn't agree more. Feel sorry for him? He is a three-star recruit whom has gotten to play much more his first two years in college than some had predicted when he came out of highschool, including starting. And his college career ain't done yet. This is how I look at it as well. Govan can space the floor about just as well.

Think you continue to mischaracterize and/or are missing the nuance of the discussion... Saying Mulmore is a key to our team is like saying Derek Fisher is the key to the Lakers success. He'll be our 5th best starter. His job should be to get the ball to the other guys defend his position and play within himself. Whoever compliments 2-5 the best will get the minutes if that's Mulmore that's fine if that's Tre or Mosely that's fine. Coaches should be able to come up with a strategy to get the ball to our best players and to be successful if and when there are struggles at the PG position regardless of who is positioned there..
