@evandaniels Georgia Tech's Josh Pastner will hire Tavaras Hardy as an assistant coach, a source told Scout. Has been at Georgetown the past 3 seasons.

So I guess this explains the assistant coaches absences from the Hoya Hoop Club banquet. Maybe position for Jaren Jackson, Sr.? Patrick Ewing, Jr. takes an assistant coach position?

Well this was vaguely referenced on another site about 4-5 days ago. Hopefully this move has not caught JT III by surprise. It is getting a little late to find quality assistants, but now it becomes imperative that the coach bring in two, at least one of whom has strong recruiting ties.

I wonder if Rob Kirby would be willing to come back to GU as an assistant?

JT3 has got to rely on more than Broadus if he hopes to keep asst coaches around for very long..
I would put in a call to Mike Morrell from Texas, who was just taken off the road by Smart..
He knows the area from being at VCU, he's reported to be a good recruiter and I'm sure he's well versed on Smart's pressing style of play..
I'm sure it's a lock now that PE Jr will get a spot, I'm all for it..

One would assume PE Jr. is getting the position. He'll need to grow into the position, but a lot of upside.

Is it common for assistants to turn over on a regular basis on college staffs or do we think there might be a bigger issue with the Georgetown program pushing assistants out of the program? I understand that assistants probably do move around sometimes looking to better position themselves for an opportunity to become a head coach but these seem like lateral moves for these two. I really have no idea on the subject and would be interested in others opinions.

I understand that assistants probably do move around sometimes looking to better position themselves for an opportunity to become a head coach but these seem like lateral moves for these two. I really have no idea on the subject and would be interested in others opinions. I couldn't find stats about assistant coaches, but this report from 2013 shows that head coaching turnover is pretty high, so I would expect assistant coaching turnover to be higher: d1scourse.typepad.com/blog/2013/06/a-look-at-current-division-i-basketball-coaching-tenures-from-1-to-351.htmlIn terms of Georgetown, it seems like 3-5 year tenures for assistant coaches, and often they leave for promotions: www.hoyabasketball.com/coaches/bb-asst.htmIt seems like from what I've read assistant coaching jobs come with different levels of responsibilities. So Sutton and Hardy could have have been promised more responsibility in the programs they were going to which makes the move a promotion (and with more responsibility usually comes more salary). Keep in mind that Broadus is the top assistant at Georgetown, so as long as he's around there's a ceiling to what the other assistants can take on.

How much of a loss do we think this is? I think Hardy was the one who pulled in Peak and White right after he got here, so he's responsible for bringing in our best player at the moment.

Yeah It's interesting but asst coach turnover ratio is higher than player transfer ratio... Good luck to coach Hardy and for 3 an opportunity to shake some things up..
Doubtful it caught 3 off guard if you pay attention to recruiting they have Broadus and PeJr recently on their priority recruits. Pryor for instance while a Chicago kid was recruited by Broadus etc...

Broadus brought in Peak I believe, Hardy brought in Govan but personally I think it's a major opportunity more than a major loss..

People have been mistakenly credited Hardy with recruiting LJ and Pryor. It's important to clarify that Broadus was the lead on both these guys, and JT3 of course was also active in their recruitments.
When you step back and look at it, both Sutton and Hardy were nice guys and good coaches, but in terms of recruiting...neither brought a whole ton to the table when it came to recruiting.

The program is losing some quality staff but has the chance to bring in new blood and talent. Good opportunity.

If it is just the nature of the assistant coach business, then it is what it is. I was just hoping is was not a signal of issues within the program. Doesn't sound like it is. I wish the two of them good luck in their new opportunities and hope the new additions to the staff, whoever they end up being, make the program even stronger.

Good luck to Coach Hardy.
I liked having someone tuned into Chicago recruiting on the staff but there are plenty of other guys with connections out there.
I hadn't heard about him pulling LJ or Govan but wasn't White his crown jewel? Hardy had been recruiting him since before he came to G-town.

Yes, White was probably his crown jewel, though to say he wasn't involved with LJ is slightly incorrect, IMO. Hardy was all over LJ when he played at Whitney Young in Chicago along with Paul White, Jahlil Okafor, etc. So I think we can say that in his short tenure at Georgetown, Hardy was an important component to recruiting 3 of the top 4 rated recruits that signed with the Hoyas during that span. This is more of a loss than Sutton, IMO. Now we need another recruiter along with an Xs/Os guy. Doesn't seem to say much for Hardy's/Suttton's impressions of JT3's capabilities to help them move up that they would leave to work for Stallings and Pastner.

Damn, I liked Coach Hardy. Can we PLEASE now get a coach with international ties? We are wasting our international brand at a time when the talent pool abroad is exploding.

What is the time frame for hiring and announcing new assistants? I would think you would want to get some people on board as soon as possible so they can help with the recruiting process. I realize we are probably not adding anyone else to the roster for this upcoming season, but this is a pretty active time for the 2017 recruits.
I have no idea if assistants at Georgetown are paid competitively or not, but I would think it would be fairly attractive job for people in the coaching business. At a minimum it should be a good name to add to a resume for an up and coming assistant coach.
