Field of 16 broken into 2 8 team tournaments, since league rivals can't be matched against each other. GU, Xavier and Butler among the 16, so, somebody is "odd team out" Checked out the article on ESPN.com. Doesn't look like Xavier is included: An idea hatched by Michigan State athletic director Mark Hollis and then executed by ESPN Events, the event will be two eight-team tournaments with two schools each from the ACC (Duke and North Carolina), Big East (Georgetown and Butler), Big Ten (Michigan State and Ohio State), Big 12 (Texas and Oklahoma), SEC (Florida and Arkansas), Pac-12 (Oregon and Stanford), and WCC (Gonzaga and Portland) and one each from the AAC (UConn) and Big Sky (Portland State).www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/story/_/id/17604683/phil-knight-invitational-portland-honor-nike-founder-phil-knight-pk80-feature-16-teams-including-north-carolina-tar-heels-duke-blue-devils-michigan-state-spartans

This tournament was announced about a year ago, but not the specifics.

This tournament has been discussed for several years. My understanding was that the three teams were allowed because they were chosen before Xavier and Butler were in the Big East, but I could be wrong.

This tournament was announced about a year ago, but not the specifics. With Hayes, Pryor, and Cameron ending their eligibility; depending on level of development for Govan and possibly Peak or Copeland moving on to the pros. We may somewhat of a thin lineup going into this stout tourney depending on the ending recruiting results. Derrickson and Mourning maybe needing some help.

Yaboy is putting together a list of international/eligible transfers/grad recruits to help the staff in Spring recruiting. Our calling card will be "join us and be featured in the Nike Invitational".

Just saw that. Not much to argue with - about the Hoyas and the other 4 teams he chose. There is definitely a wide gap between some of those teams, though.

Meh there are tons of other teams I could throw on that list that have fallen on much harder times than us: DePaul, San Francisco, Houston, NC State, Georgia Tech, Illinois, UNLV, Texas St, Wyoming, NYU, Holy Cross. Until last year you could've had Maryland on that list. Things can change quickly. I was going to list BC but they were never that good to begin with.

Of those teams you list, I would say that NC State, GA Tech, and maybe Illinois and UNLV, are even relevant any more though. So to me, the article didn't bother me all that much because the implication is that the program has fallen off but is still relevant (despite what some of the usual doomsdayers around here say).

It feels like there is more riding on this year than any year I can recall in recent history. We are now in the "new" big east, haven't made the tourney in 2 of last 3 years, haven't been to sweet 16 in 10 years, haven't landed a top 50 kid in the last few years, have missed out on all our '17 targets thus far, and we're bailed out by a graduate transfer, a juco, and a 5th year of eligibility for our big man. Unless something drastic happens on the recruiting trail, we aren't going to be any better next year...and probably worse.
Bottom line....we have to win this year. If we don't we are headed for a dark abyss.

This year is a tipping point year as far as I'm concerned. I shifted some of my donation away from the basketball program this year. Giving to this program feels like throwing money away at this point and there are other sports that will hopefully benefit more from the gift. I don't think anyone could like the direction in which the basketball team is headed and as much as it pains me to do it I felt I needed to make a statement - however small - about my lack of confidence in the current stewardship of the program.
