III seems to be making a shift in approach that some think is long overdue. Let's hope he figures it out this year with the new and old pieces. I'm open to change as I think that's the only hope for the program. He's been swimming upstream for too long. Good luck Coach.

www.washingtontimes.com/news/2016/nov/3/pryor-should-help-new-look-georgetown-bounce-back/When 24-year-old graduate-student transfer Rodney Pryor joined Georgetown, not everyone appreciated him acting like the big man on campus. “From Day One he came in, he was very vocal,” junior forward Isaac Copeland said. “At first it kind of rubbed me the wrong way like, ‘What is this new dude talking about all this stuff for?’ But after Week One or Week Two I was like, he’s going to be a big part of our team this year.” ______ After averaging 18 points a game at Robert Morris, Pryor got a sixth year of eligibility and picked Georgetown over Kansas, Gonzaga and Florida. “Obviously Kansas is a top-tier school, but I didn’t feel the need for me was as high because they got great players,” the 6-foot-5 guard said at Georgetown’s preseason media day Thursday. “To have a top-tier school like (Georgetown) want me and need me goes a long way, and I want to make sure I prove to them that they picked the right person.” ______ “You need rebounds to run a fast break,” Copeland said. “We have athletes at all positions this year, so get the rebound and push it.” Adding Pryor, Mulmore, Mosely and getting former Louisville forward Akoy Agau back after he missed all last season with a torn ACL makes the Hoyas more athletic. It has also provided more depth after managers joined practice at times last year to fill holes. ________ PEAK PLAYING TIME: Peak was better off the bench than starting last season, Thompson conceded, though it’s not certain what his role will be now. Peak is one of Georgetown’s best players, so if he can handle starting again he will. _______ DON’T FORGET IT: Peak believes Georgetown should just drop last year’s disappointment, while Copeland considers it motivation. Their coach is following the latter. “We’re not going to keep picking that scab,” Thompson said. “We have to make some changes on how things were done, and we have. We’re in the process of doing it.” FOUL PLAY: After being one of the most foul-prone teams in the nation last season, The coaching staff is preaching playing better defense and being more disciplined at the same time. “Last year we fouled too much,” Thompson said. “Last year we didn’t get to the line enough. All of those have been looked at and try to figure out how to address those issues.”

However, integrating a veteran player into an established team is not easy or simple and the coach will have to stay on top of this all year to make sure it does not go south. On paper this team looks strong. The reality comes on the court in terms of how minutes are distributed at each position and who is dominating the ball. Hopefully, the coach rewards effort and production equally. After last year everyone connected with that team has something to prove.

This is what I like to hear from the players! Not about pushing it but the realization that the rebound is the most important action in basketball. You crash the boards, get the ball, and you can do whatever you want with it afterwards...hell even miss your shots, but get the rebound and throw up another.

The remark about Coach Thompson is unfair but it's not just a dig from a New York paper--this argument has taken root in the small-c casual fan base. These are the people that aren't checking FS 1 listings or arguing the verities of Pryor vs. Mulmore. A lot of these alumni offer passing attention until March and then wonder what happened. It's imperative to get off to a good start in 2016-17 and avoid a rolling boil on this story line.

Is it really that unfair? I think another crapshow like last year would certainly amplify the noise about JTIII.
Although the solid recruiting class may mildly soften the din.

I'd say as someone who's been a critic of our coach on this board, it's the perception that is out there in the country and among the alumni that don't live on these boards. Whether that is fair or not is another debate but as we all know perception becomes reality. I think JTIII did a great job of righting the roster this offseason but if that roster doesn't perform it continues to point to him for not being able to coach them as that's been a recurring pattern. I have hope for the season but I've also seen the board rate the preseason only to see it unravel.

I agree Eagle. JT3 is back to Square 1 with most fans, media and recruits regarding buy-in. He's got to prove he can coach, and change his philosophy, before anyone is going to project anything positive for the Hoyas.
And that's fair. He's a superb person and mentor who has really, really struggled with his on-court product for multiple seasons now and underachieved relative to talent by any objective scale.
I am extremely heartened by what seems to be a sea change in his recruiting and strategic focus toward the kind of quicker, slashing perimeter players the rules favor more and more each season and away from our plodding high-post offense of the past. Everybody likes 6-9 guys who have versatile skill sets, but the college game is literally driven by guards, and specifically guards who can get to the rim or the line. The rules make it more difficult to defend those players every season. Finally we seem to be as focused on acquiring those types as the rest of the world has been for some time.
Recognizing that you have a problem is the first step toward a solution, and it seems JT3 has taken that step.
Can't wait to see the new-look Hoyas!!

I fully expect that Waters will make JTIII look like a genius of a coach. I value talent over coaching ability any day of the week.

I agree that the game changing has worked against our team. JTIII did not change effectively when the rules changed! While it has been years since Hoya Prospectus did the analysis, the early teams under JTIII scored at a high efficiency in the first 7 seconds and last 7 seconds of the 35 second shot clock. Unfortunately, I suspect since our teams have not had a good fast break in the last 3 years and the shot clock during those years has shortened to 30 seconds, our teams lost their highest efficiency scoring. Also during those same 3 years our defense has been hurt by the change in rules that does not allow defensive hand checks. It appears the new assistants come from programs that did not have the same defensive drop off as the Hoya teams. Hopefully, adding pick and roll options and better 3 point shooting, our teams can get faster high efficiency scoring while not fouling on every possession. Otherwise, this year will be more of the same. I'm betting the new look Hoyas will score efficiently and defend effectively!

Been banging this drum since I researched tournament success at a very granular level in 2009.
The No. 1 predictor of NCAA Tourn success between 2000 and 2008 was FT offense; statistically, it was twice as closely linked with postseason success as any other team trait. My suspicion is that the rule changes have only made that statistic an even stronger predictor of success. You better get to the line often and convert at a high rate once there and prevent your opponents from doing the same if you want to make deep NCAA tournament runs.
Recruiting guards who can get to the rim or the line has been the name of the game since at least 2000, and JT3 is finally on board.
Play defense and drive the basketball. Pretty simple formula that just won a Nova team without an NBA player a title.

Now Tre, you know the media will slobber all over our Hoyas if we win a couple of big OOC games and avoid a Radford level meltdown. It is just what they do.
