Seton Hall is excellent at drawing fouls. Particularly Whitehead. Driving directly into someone then jerking your body into the opposite direction as you make contact, without much effort to actually make the shot. Really selling the foul. Someone said that officials typically look more at the reaction of the offensive player after contact, and it really showed last night. This was evidenced by 20+ points on ZERO field goals in the last 14+ minutes of the second half.
I don't think anyone knows how to do this on our team. Occasionally DSR is able to, but no one else. It actually takes a decent ball handler to do it, particularly on the periphery, because you need to be able to control the ball even if the foul isn't called.
Thoughts? I think we are in an era, unfortunately, where we need to "adapt" to the new fouling rules and specifically teach these skills.

I want NONE of the SHU/ Nova flopping culture. Let them have those fouls. I do not want to see Hoyas doing that garbage, and I am HAPPY to live with the results.

It goes against the spirit of the game, which is often the main reason people play sports.

One new rule this year was supposed to be flopping and offensive players creating contact solely to look like a foul was committed, but the mere fact that there hasn't been a flop called all season indicates that this rule was forgotten:
From the Rules Update:
"Rules 10-3.1 and 11-2.1.d:
Add “faking being fouled by an opponent” as a Class A technical foul. Such acts include, but are not limited to, flopping or sudden movement of the head in an attempt to draw a foul. However, such fouls could only be assessed after an official has elected to use instant replay to review whether a flagrant foul has been committed and, in doing so, sees a clear violation of the rule involving faking being fouled.
Rationale: Penalize this unsportsmanlike act, which is becoming more prevalent."
Seriously - has this happened even one time all year?
I do agree that our guys don't do this, and I am essentially happy with that per the above two posts, but damn if DSR and LJ absolutely NEVER get calls in the paint. Some statistician should run the numbers on that someday...

I posted this in the game thread last night, and I don't think I'm going to change my mind. "Drawing a foul" is now a thing in sports. It wasn't 20-30 years ago, but it is now. If we don't want to play the game the way it is called, then we can't expect to be successful:
Hate to say it, but we need to start flopping more. The powers that be in college hoops have decided that this is how the game will be played and officiated. If someone as much as farts on you, fall down and whine for the call. It's clearly worth it. And everything else we try doesn't work. Our best defense might be just flopping and hoping for the best.

Don't teach the kids to be tough, strong and play through contact. Teach them to whine, gripe and complain when their flopping isn't validated. Cam is right that this is the way the game is trending, but I hope we don't go down that path.
Oh, and ghuck John Cahill, just on principle.

Lets keep hoping we don't "go down that path" aka adjust to the changes in college and pro basketball while we ride off into oblivion as a program. You think LeBron doesn't head fake his way to the free throw line? Not saying that this is the biggest problem with the current team, but I'd love someone to teach these guys how to draw fouls. We have had to win every game this year by ~10 points just to stay even due to free throw discrepancy.

It could almost be called for every Duke and Seton Hall game as they do a great job selling calls that aren't there. Xavier did a good job today of selling calls to refs. DSR! Derrickson and Peak were victimized by the exaggerated body jerking to get calls today and the refs fell for it. I have yet to see a referee make this call all year. I had heard of this rule before the season started and was excited for it as I thought it would clean up the game some. It has yet to be called and had gotten to the point that I wondered if this rule was actually existed or did I imagine it.
