The other thing to note about our fouling is the inordinate number of moving screens we get called for on the offensive end. We usually pick up 3 or 4 of these a game - usually on Govan or hayes, but others have been called for this violation as well. The coaches have to be telling these guys not to move so much on their screens - it really is frustrating that the players keep making this same mistake over and over. I think our reputation contributes to some of this. In reality, you could probably call a moving screen foul on two-thirds of picks set in college basketball. Happens all the time. And even when it doesn't happen, a lot of players fighting thru the picks flop to try to get the call. If a ref is looking right at it, he'll call it. I think because of our reputation for fouling a lot, refs look for it more frequently when we are setting picks. So we get called for more of them. I think it's a little bit of everything. We do commit stupid offensive fouls (yes, you could call a moving pick on virtually every play, but a fair number of the ones called on us are no-brainer types where the screener and the defender are both moving toward each other when contact is made); we do fall victim to the new rules; we are slow laterally; the refs are generally incompetent; our reputation for fouling hurts at the margins. Having a "reputation" for fouling doesn't necessarily mean there's a conspiracy, and I doubt very much there is one. The fact that we don't aggressively take the ball to the hoop as often as our opponents do, when combined with everything above, results in a big disparity and makes us hyper-aware of it.

Aside from the clearly horrible call in the Creighton game, the issue is not the refs. When you are beat on defense constantly, you either let the guy go for an easy hoop or foul. The reason for the high number of fouls is that our guys get beat on defense and on rebounds and loose balls.
On O, we do not go the hoop so there are fewer calls in our favor.
