Dwayne Wade's reaction -- hilarious. www.jsonline.com/sports/marq/may05/323993.aspA famous alum's reaction Posted: May 5, 2005 From an ESPN interview with Dwyane Wade of the Miami Heat: ESPN: Your alma mater, Marquette, changed their nickname to the Gold. . . . What do you think of that? Wade: To the what? ESPN: To the Gold. The Marquette Gold. That's what they're going with now. Wade: Awh . . . I got to call. I got to call in on that one. ESPN: We are breaking some news. Wade: I heard they were trying to change it back to Warriors. ESPN: No, I guess they are going with Gold. I'm surprised they didn't call you to check to see if it was OK with you. Wade: The Gold? ESPN: Yeah. Wade: No, I got to make a phone call to Marquette after we get off this . . . (laughter). . . . I don't know about that one. ESPN: So that might change . . . Wade: Marquette Gold. The Gold! ESPN: All right, Dwyane . . . So far so good. I know your word carries a lot of weight at Marquette as well as Miami. Congratulations, enjoy the rest of the playoffs. Wade: Thank you, I will. The Gold?

It could definatly be worse, back home we have the Long Beach Artists and the Santa Cruz Banana Slugs. California striking fear in opposing schools one politicaly correct mascot at a time. Clarification: CSU Long Beach are the 49ers, their top 10 baseball team goes by Dirtbags. Laguna Beach High School was "The Artists" for years and changed it 2-3 years ago to "The Breakers" My high school was very intimidating in its own right "The Steamers" after the Stanley Steamer which a vacuum cleaner or something.

This thread has got me rolling at work..
I've gotta say, I've been one of about 7 regular posters on the ESPN message board for G-Town for the last couple years and somehow, in all my visits to HoyaSaxa, I never followed the links to the message boards - man was I missing out...
I figure I've got a couple weeks of wasted time coming my way reading through this site..
Nice to see some fans who care...

C'mon, if you're a real fan you'll read it from start to finish! And then ask DFW if he's got archives from the "old" board. Welcome! Be sure to invite the other folk from ESPN on over!

I love not only how the board managed to come up with this horrific nickname, but also that it was passed unanimously. Did not one member on that 38 person board think, "Hey wait a minute, maybe making our school mascot a color/element is not the best idea." How optimistic and out of touch these board members are is pathetic to the point of amusement. “I am really pleased that the trustees have chosen this direction for Marquette athletics,” Wild said. “With Marquette Gold, the board has captured decades of traditions.” I think he has convinced and deluded himself to the point where he honestly believes that. Anyways here is a link for the few who have not read the artical expressing the contrasting board and alumni opinion. www.marquettetribune.org/nickname.bspalso a funny conversation where Wild is grilled by a radio DJ. marquette.scout.com/2/376817.html

Yeah, the handle was an ESPN one - JerseyHoya was taken so I figured may as well change to something close...
Originally from Jersey City NJ (oh yeah, home to Anthony Perry - who can forget!), but I've been in the DC area since graduation in '01..
I'll be sure to get the rest of the ESPN board - all 10 of us - over here... It's a pretty sad board actually, more trolls from other schools than Hoya fans..

I was thinking The Thunder of Marquette would be better from a Gladiator point of view. There was actually a gladiator (apparently an alternate) named Panther, so there are a few schools out there with that name. And as per IMDB.com, there were also gladiators named Titan (CS-Fullerton), Hawk, Rebel, and Cyclone. www.imdb.com/title/tt0096532/As an aside, with the entrance of Marquette into the Big East, will Gold Hoya have a name change in order as well? OK so am I the only one that spent a little too much time checking out the rest of the film careers of all my favorite Gladiators? Nice work Joe, great post. Also, per the Laguna Beach Artist discussion, I'm crushed that they changed it to Breakers. I knew about how they used to be the Artists (a bunch of years ago when some friends of mine went there) and I hadn't heard that they changed it. Bring back the Artists I say!

dude, all i know is that my roommate (a marquette 2004 grad now working on the Hill) FREAKED OUT when she heard the news. i had to listen to her rant for like half an hour while trying to study for my Corporations final. i thought the angry irish woman in her only came out after a few pints, but man, that doesn't even compare! gotta feel their pain though . . . eesh, what a poor choice for a name . . .
on the topic of bad names: this may have been mentioned (sorry, i skipped right to page 4), but in addition to the Laguna Beach Artists (i went to high school in the town next door, and one of my best buddies played ball there . . . it also happens to be the Dupont Circle of Orange County, so you can imagine the jokes they used to get on the football field), Southern California also boasts the Whittier College Poets. My dad played point on the their bball team in the 70's . . . no wonder he cut his career short with a "knee injury."
