That's even worse than the Golden Eagles. Wow. They must have thought really hard to come up with a nickname that bad. I love the picture of the "proposed mascot" on the right column of the article. EDIT: Here's a line from a guy on another board I read. How classic: " Just picture the game between Marquette and Syracuse....The Crayola Cup...Gold vs. Orange" Also, here's the Gold's new "monogram logo:"

Well, you know, on the plus side--how many Division I programs can say they share a name with one of the cast members on "American Gladiators"? I was just shocked they didn't go with "Turbo".

This is the worst nickname ever. Ever. At least there's some history behind Orange, and some people occasionally called them that. Gold. Does that make Bradley Center "Fort Knox" ? Are all of the players going to have #24 (karats) ? This is crap and it is UNFAIR!

Gold. Does that make Bradley Center "Fort Knox" ? Lots of cheap jokes out there, like the one where the Al McGuire Center will be renamed "Gold's Gym..."

I was thinking The Thunder of Marquette would be better from a Gladiator point of view. There was actually a gladiator (apparently an alternate) named Panther, so there are a few schools out there with that name. And as per IMDB.com, there were also gladiators named Titan (CS-Fullerton), Hawk, Rebel, and Cyclone. www.imdb.com/title/tt0096532/As an aside, with the entrance of Marquette into the Big East, will Gold Hoya have a name change in order as well?

As someone who went to a high school with a nickname that did little to intimidate opponents (Jesuits) I can honestly say that "Gold" is the weakest name I have ever heard.

It could definatly be worse, back home we have the Long Beach Artists and the Santa Cruz Banana Slugs. California striking fear in opposing schools one politicaly correct mascot at a time.

My favorite is the picture of the students' reactions to the announcement. People I think were genuinely excited at the possibility of changing the name back to "Warriors". They've got to be devastated by this.

As an aside, with the entrance of Marquette into the Big East, will Gold Hoya have a name change in order as well? Oh man, I didn't think of that! The Gold goes with my name, and DFW Hoya believes Marquette is still the Warriors, so I think I'll keep it for now. My favorite is the picture of the students' reactions to the announcement. People I think were genuinely excited at the possibility of changing the name back to "Warriors". They've got to be devastated by this. I'd post some of the reactions I've received via e-mail and IM from Marquette alums -- except the moderators would then kick me off the boards. Wait, I found one: i can't stand this. let me fall on a dull plastic knife. i would rather endure that slow painful death that have to be known as the "gold." i'm contemplating taking my diploma off my wall.

This evokes images of Samir from "Office Space" reacting to the "jump to conclusions" mat, after Michael Bolton says that it's the worst idea he's ever heard.
"Yes, is horrible."

Don't forget Long Beach State's baseball team is called the Dirtbags. Gold is still better than yelling "Go Cocks" when your team runs onto the field.

I always thought it was funny when our teams would play any of the local schools nicknamed "Indians" considering the history of Jesuit missionaries from Spain and France "converting" Indians.
