A remarkable, brave, bold, pathbreaking, and extremely necessary address. A charge for the University for the 21st century. A job very well done by JJD, who is the right person at the right time. I enjoyed seeing lichoya in the audience, among others. This work will take the whole of the community - well, all total, all of the society - to come to fruition. But I'd like to think we're in a better place than most. Stay woke, all.

Two responses in this very thread serve to reinforce the urgent need for the major initiative DeGioia is undertaking. GU has its own unique connections to this issue. Our colors, blue and gray, were adopted in the interest of helping to reconcile the two sides after the Civil War. And John Thompson Jr. was the (arguably) the first black HC of a major D1 basketball program in America, and the first to win a National Championship. In those early days all kinds of ugly invectives were made, and later even Patrick Ewing suffered some of that.. though most was from our rival schools and other competitors.
GU is making a major effort to address racial injustice in the country. I don't understand how any Hoya would not whole heartedly endorse the effort. Congratulations to Jack and to GU.

Sarcasm aside, if you read the entire speech / proposal, it is far more comprehensive than just creating a new department. Men and women for others, as they say.

Creating an African American Studies will definitely end racial injustice in America. Society-wide problems can only be solved by society as a whole - be definition, a single person or institution cannot pull that off. But I do believe that Georgetown, by virtue of its history, its location, and its institutional charge to be an agent of social justice and ethics, can and should play a significant role in that effort. Indeed, it may be in a particularly advantageous position to do so. Some other responses to this thread show that you can fool most of the people most of the time. Ah well, I hope we beat Seton Hall. There is no small irony in the fact that the commonly attributed author of the quote you are paraphrasing was murdered by an avowed agent of white supremacy.

Here is the text of the speech. president.georgetown.edu/racial-injustice#_ga=1.239853568.2049526588.1449510016 Very impressive. It sounds like he is definitely leaning toward creating a department, although the speech was actually non-committal, despite what student press coverage said. I can't think of any purely interdisciplinary departments at Georgetown, so it would definitely be a break with current practice. (Granted, Georgetown has an entirely interdisciplinary school with SFS.) Clearly, JJD is still working it out and needs to let the faculty think through it too. It cannot be overstated what a big deal this is. Eight new faculty, combined with the eight professors currently in the program africanamericanstudies.georgetown.edu/people, would make the envisioned department/program one of the larger ones in the U.S. Has Georgetown EVER hired eight faculty members in two years for anything?? Even McCourt, with a $100 million tailwind, has been slower to add faculty. This demonstrates a truly historic commitment. Granted, almost all, if not all, professors in the department would have multiple department assignments, but it would overnight be larger than say the departments of anthropology, classics, and sociology. I'm sure the funding have been worked out, but one has to wonder where it is coming from, given all of the competing priorities. Perhaps JJD has lined up some donors. Finally, I was thinking back to a discussion on this board when Prof. Dyson joined Georgetown. A question was asked along the lines of how could Georgetown leverage the presence of someone with his stature within the academy. Perhaps he has had a hand in recruiting the various promising jr. faculty members in the African American studies program. Certainly, he will have a hand in this expansion.

I confess that I didn't have a chance to watch the entire 1.5 hour speech. Did JJD secure an outside funding commitment prior to the announcement? Where is the money to fun a bold initiative like this coming from?
