We've got to figure out their 1-3-1 and Hayes needs to be on going right at Reynolds. Hayes & Govan being off on Saturday is why we lost to Nova. Ochefu could barely walk out there. Would be a great win but my hopes are muted at best. To my understanding is that the weakness of the 1-3-1 zone is that rebounding is lost b/c of the wing players are on the perimeter, and it'll leave just one traditional big man to rebound by himself. Now if the Hoyas guard would penetrate down low then Hayes or Govan should be able to win the match up on the post. However, if Xavier attempt to double team the either big, this is when the open jumper is available. That 1-3-1 zone is will negate the perimeter shooting even more if the Hoyas big can't do damage on the post.

"We need to figure out the 1-3-1".
We always had trouble figuring it out when Beilein's WV teams would throw it at us, Xavier destroyed us 3 times last year with it (save a 10-minute stretch in the second half of the BET game when everything we threw up was going in), last year's crappy Marquette team even gave us fits with it. I don't get a sense that we'll somehow crack the code tomorrow.
I'm shocked that more teams don't play it against us.

Kaleb is the ideal player to have on the top. I feel we should trial it more, I mean we more length/height than any other BE team.

JT3 has won a game he shouldn't in each of the three years he has missed the tournament (@ #16 Pitt in 2004-05, @ #10 Nova in 2008-09, and at MSG against #7 Michigan St. in 2013-14) All three of those wins were big surprises--It was something like Pitt's second loss ever at Peterson Events Center, the 08-09 team had basically quit on the season (they were 2-8 in their prior 10 games) and the 13-14 team had lost their last five games before playing MSU.
All of those wins were against very good teams, away from Verizon, and were completely unexpected.
Maybe this game against Xavier will be this year's version of those games (hopefully without the "missing the NCAAs" part)

Ah, Xavier will be looking past us. It will be the ideal trap game for them.

We were supposed to be one of the standard-bearers of the new Big East, and instead we're hoping to be a trap game for Xavier.
Makes me sad...

Mediocre, disappointing, puzzling - pick your term. But we still have the talent. We have 2/3 of the BE season left plus the BET. Keep your hopes and your faith alive Hoya fans. This CAN turn around. Starting tomorrow.

To me, the real game is Uconn, that is a must have. This game would be an amazing win, easily our best of the new BE era.
I read where III said he wants to grind this out. I get it on the defensive end, let's use our fouls and muck it up for them. But the only way the Hoyas pull an upset is with some slick 3 point shooting (40%+ on a lot of attempts). That is a strength of ours and they are going to be too physical for our bigs to handle. We can try to dump it down low to start, but once we confirm that is not going to work, time to bomb away.

Oh, I don't think there's any doubt we will do just that, if only because we don't really have any other options! We'll surely try the low post and hope for a better game, but otherwise we're simply going to have to make a bunch of threes. I don't think, offensively, there's really going to be much variance from game to game, unless Ike starts playing a lot better, which would change things.

Mack has JTIII's number. This is gonna be ugly, especially considering X is the best its been since entering the conference and G is arguably the worst its been. I expect 15-20 pt loss and 15 turnovers. An ugly loss to Nova notwithstanding, this team has shown very little to give its fanbase confidence that they will put up a fight against an aggressive, punch you in the mouth team like Xavier

We have a game against a top 5 team in four and a half hours, and there hasn't been a post in this thread in four hours.
That's a sign of the times, I guess. Definitely sad for me...

With the way this season is going, I predict that we will put up a Maryland-like game performance, but ultimately run out of gas.

I agree all our expectations have been muted by a team that seems to fall just short on tough challenges and seems to let down their guard playing the types of teams that have beaten us in the tourney for the past 5+ years. Still if this season is going to not be a bust, now is when our two headed center, our senior star guard and our long sophomore and freshman classes need to come together and start winning. While I don't believe the loss of White will ever go unnoticed this season, I believe a run of good wins is not only possible but to be expected with a team of pieces better than the pieces on our last 5-6 teams.

Clearly, Xavier is the better team overall, but that does not mean they will be the better team tonight. If we can play good defense and hit some shots, we can win the game. Winning this game would be as good, maybe even better, than beating Villanova on Saturday. Let's do it.
