For any current student that reads this board, the elections for Hoya Blue are on Tuesday at 8:30pm in McDonough.
GUHoya2007 is running for President and I'm running for Treasurer. You'll know us by the We Are Georgetown shirts we'll be wearing.
If you want Hoya Blue to become relevant again and to be the presence on campus and at all Georgetown sporting events that it should be, please come out and vote for us on Tuesday night.

I think I'm going to have to borrow Jack's "turd in the punch bowl" analogy here.
It seems to me that as much as they seem to be reaching out to try and improve things, they really don't want to do it. I went to that first meeting (what feels like months ago) and gave them my email address. I have yet to get an email about this meeting, and have yet to see it anywhere except on GUHoyas (a site which, face it, not many students frequent...and by "frequent" I mean "visit ever in their four years here") and this board. The meeting is about 28 hours away...where is the publicity?
On the flip side, the smaller the crowd, the better chance our guys have of winning...but still. Nobody is going to just up and go to a meeting on one of the prime party nights of the year (the first "study day"), especially when they don't get told about it until they see the usual flyer on the cafeteria door Tuesday at lunch.
Maybe I'm just jaded by my cynicism...but this is a little ridiculous.

Joe, the meetings underpublicized, but you have to remember who WOULD be in charge of publicizing it. You shouldn't expect the current Hoya Blue leadership to do, well, anything really; and the AD put it up on GUHoyas.com, which, except for flyering, is really their only means to convey anything.
This meeting being underpublicized is not really a bad thing. It likely means that those attending will be all of the same people as last time, plus however many friends each camp can produce. Last meeting most of us were clamoring to hold the elections then and there, so the fact that the electorate will be very similar is probably ok by most. The only difference will be the friends who come out to vote as a favor, which really underscores the need for us all to not only attend, but bring some people as well.
If "the reformers" are successful tomorrow night (knock on wood), I think most of the concerns about lack of publicity will disappear quickly.

The athletic department has PLENTY of means by which they can notify people of events. Who do you think puts up the fancy color posters for the games outside the cafeteria?
My main point was that at that meeting, they told us that the elections would be within a week or two. Like I said, I don't remember when exactly the meeting was (I wanna say three or four weeks ago), and I can deal with a little delay. But they took down email addresses, and have yet to use them one day before the election. THAT is what Editedes me off.

Maybe I'm just jaded by my cynicism...but this is a little ridiculous. I don't want to launch into an essay on Hoya Blue, but that's the direction things have been going since my sophomore year. Here's a little personal history. My freshman year, 1999, when Trevor Rusin was running the show for Hoya Blue, the policy was pretty open. I actually participated in HB stuff because e-mails were sent out to the entire student body inviting them to participate. If you showed up early at a designated spot you got into MCI early to make signs, paint your chest, and generally get the place ready for gametime. My sophomore year, all of that stopped. Only one invitation of the sort sent out freshman year was sent. That was for the Syracuse game, which was the biggest game of the season not only because of the rivalry but because an NCAA at-large bid was on the line. I showed up early at the gates, took a cab downtown with the rest of those who showed up. After we got to MCI, some of us were then told by the president we had too many people and only a few of us could get in early. Anyone who wasn't HB brass was advised to go to Burger King. The HB prez's reason was that he thought he might get in trouble with MCI security for simply asking to get about ten extra people in early. After it was pointed out to him that this had never been a problem the previous year, and that none of us would have paid cab fare downtown at 10:00 am if we knew we weren't going to get in, he reluctantly agreed to take the bold step of asking MCI if people not holding official Hoya Blue titles could come in with him. Lo and behold, security let us all in. I think this story is analagous to the overall HB story: it's an organization that could reach out to many students but instead chooses to offer benefits only to those who wish to become extra-involved with the organization. I was abroad junior year, but when I came back senior year the HB prez was one of my classmates. That year, there was apparently no effort made to have an HB presence at any athletic event other than basketball. At basketball games, HB organized among themselves but failed to reach out to the rest of the student section. People had trouble getting the official t-shirts. Cheer sheets were distributed only in the HB seating section. Whenever I tried to talk to the HB president about these things at the Tombs, or wrote about them in The Hoya, she saw my criticisms as personal attacks on her, so no changes were ever made. I've been off campus for two basketball seasons now, so I don't know how much things have changed, for better or for worse. But if its still the same as when I left then HB is shutting out a lot of kids that want to organize with others at games but don't want to be die-hard Hoya Bluers. Note to 2007: If you do get elected, can you post your strategy for the upcoming academic year either here or on the HB Suggestion Box board? I think you'd probably get some helpful feedback. [EDIT: I forgot to say good luck to both of you in the election. You both obviously care about GU hoops and have already taken positive steps to help the program. Here's hoping you get a chance to do more.]

The AD hangs those things more often than they hang standard 8.5 x 11's..... Anyway, I dont disagree with your main point. It does seem as if the AD has been somewhat lackadaisical about getting the word out about this meeting. I really don't know why. Maybe they wanted it to be that way, or maybe they didn't want to put the money into making those posters for this event. I'm not sure. But the thing is, we're not trying to reform the Athletic Department, were trying to reform Hoya Blue. Its a shame that the meeting hasn't been advertised well, but I truly believe that if 007 and TBird win tomorrow, stuff like this won't happen. If theres something to do with athletics happening on campus, you can bet that it'll be advertised well. Don't be too discouraged by the lack of attention given to this meeting, and take solace in knowing that if Hoyatalk's own "Reformers" are elected tomorrow night, this sort of thing won't happen anymore.

Just a reminder, the elections will be held tonight, Wednesday night, at 8:30, Team Room A in McD.
How you get there:
Walk in the front door of McD, walk left. Thru the hall, there will be a stairway upwards. Take it. Team room A is at the top of the stair.

An update from the election: The old regime's candidate DID NOT SHOW UP. Most, if not all, of the crowd was for Kurt and Tom. Seems like the Hoya Blue revolution has begun.

Thanks guys, it's good that we have that out of the way now and it's time to get to work.
We've talked and complained a lot, now its time to let our actions speak louder than our words.
We need to give everything we have to this and make Hoya Blue the best it's ever been. Let's get it done.
WE ARE GEORGETOWN!!!

Congrats. If there is anything this old curmudgeon from California can do, let me know. We [GU] need your spirit. Ding Dong the witch is dead. A new dawn has come.
