I disagree with the notion it's free labor. There is nothing free about scholarships, about $ going to training and coaching, about free clothing, food stipends, and exposure through schools media departments. In most cases student athletes are getting far more from universities than they will return to them from a $ stand point. Sure, one can argue that certain players at certain programs are contributing more than they are getting, but in my mind this is few and far between. The program's make money because they pay their coaches, pay for the best facilities, and pay people to negotiate contracts for tv rights. Sure, they receive labor in return, but there is nothing free to the university to pay tutors, coaches, trainers, recruiters, etc in addition to facilities. Maybe there is an imbalance in some cases, but I never agree with notion that players don't receive some sort of compensation for their talents. Just because $ aren't exchanged doesn't mean the university is not putting $ in.

Really a separate discussion. I'm not concerned with the issue of paying college athletes as much as I am with the use of academic institutions as NBA minor leagues and the impact it has on kids who don't really want to attend college but feel they must in order to showcase their talents to NBA scouts and eventually have a career in professional basketball.

Perfect timing on the new thread then . Giving players the rights and ability to use their namesake to earn money would go a long way to help both the players while in college and in the NBA (by having a more well known name).

I can't think of a better way to destroy a team than to allow one or more of the players to receive money while their teammates get nothing. I'm afraid this, and other efforts to pay players, is a sad attempt to appear to make reforms without doing anything to address the corruption of collegiate NCAA football and basketball.

Simon would be a nice get for St. John's. Marvin Clark from Michigan State also visiting, solid undersized 4-man who could provide some quality minutes.

There is nothing to like about Bilas. Certainly not as much. Toeing that corporate line. ESPN didn't even put up BE box scores on their website for many games this year.

He's become more and more biased as the years have passed and as the landscape has changed. He's gone from a solid analyst to a corporate hack in a fairly short time. He was always pro ACC (understandably) but, on his good days in years past, he'd also, occasionally, call the ACC out for being overrated. Those days are pretty much gone. You'd think he'd have built enough of a rep and would have enough credibility to attempt to at least appear to be impartial. He chose a different path. As a result, he now sucks. He's more Dick Vitale and less a younger Jay Bilas at this point.

Also, he is one of the leaders in calling for/ promoting/ validating the rule changes that are destroying basketball. We need a return to 1990s officiating- not this crap. Bilas is truly awful.
