Good obit by DFW on the front page. Interestingly, next week's Economist (online now, on newstands Monday), will feature an article about the decline of local government in San Diego. The current mayor is resigning, his deputy is about to go on trial for allegedly accepting illegal campaign contributions from a strip club owner, and the city council has made some bad decisions recently. I bring this up because, amid its description of the city's problems, the article refers to San Diego's international reputation (or, at least, former reputation) as "America's best-run big city." I would agree that San Diego is generally thought of as being a clean, efficient, safe, and beautiful metropolis. After reading DFW's piece, it sounds as if Mr. Walsh played a significant role in developing and nuturing that reputation. It's always nice to hear about a Georgetown alum who made a positive impact on his community, big or small. I'm sure Mr. Walsh will be missed, and it sounds like San Diego could use his leadership right now.

San Diego is a victim of its own success. For years it has been a small city with big city population, having none of the problems that plagued larger cities.
Bigger problems are moving in (all forseeable) and the "magic" that all the residents there believe in is not going to stop them. But San Diego's solution over the past fifteen years has been to ignore them and hope they go away.
